If you like your mead big, bad and boozy, then you are going to want to make your way to Lancaster’s Lilly Belle Meads this weekend for the release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Bobby, a barrel aged mead made with caramelized wildflower honey, which returns on February 8 (12pm). BBA Bobby will be available in bottles on Saturday and a limited amount will be available on draft on Friday. Bottles are $24 with no purchase limits.
BBA Bobby is a 13.5% mead made with dark caramelized honey, which gives it sweet bourbon and toasted marshmallow flavors. Aged in a Black Button Distilling Bourbon barrel, it tames the sweetness of Bobby and adds complex bourbon, oak, and candied orange notes as well as a nice smoothness.
For those that may not know what mead is, it’s an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. The alcoholic content ranges from about 3.5% ABV to more than 20%. The defining characteristic of mead is that the majority of the beverage’s fermentable sugar is derived from honey. It may be still, carbonated, or naturally sparkling; dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
