Big Ditch Brewing Company has announced the release of Gateway IPA, a beer brewed especially for the Basil Port of Call, one of Canalside’s largest events of summer and the arrival of 12 historic ‘Tall Ships’ from throughout the United States, Canada, Spain and the South Pacific. This will be the first time that the Tall Ships have moored in Buffalo.
“Buffalo is considered to be the gateway to the west (thanks to the Erie Canal), and we’re happy to do join in the community-wide welcome of this majestic fleet to the Buffalo Waterfront,” said Matt Kahn, president of Big Ditch Brewing Company. “This beer is a gateway for a beer drinkers looking for something light-bodied, refreshing and drinkable, yet full of flavor. It’s perfect for sailing, boating, waterfront activities and Fourth of July weekend.”
Basil Port of Call will offer a unique opportunity for adults and children alike to view and explore the 12 extraordinary vessels and feature an exciting array of family activities, entertainment, historic exhibits, artisan foods and beverages and music.
There are currently over 500 active Tall Ships around the world, including the giant 131-foot-plus “Class A” square-rigged vessels, with baroque, barquentine, brig or brigantine sail plans; and “Class B” ships, which are traditionally-rigged vessels.
Basil Port of Call Buffalo is presented in cooperation with Tall Ships America®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1973. Tall Ships America® is focused on youth education, leadership development and the preservation of the maritime heritage of North America. The Tall Ships Challenge® Series of international sailing races, cruises, and maritime festivals is organized by Tall Ships America in cooperation with Great Lakes, Atlantic and Pacific Coast port cities in the United States and Canada. These tall ships are crewed by young people and adults engaged in sail training programs under the supervision of captains and professional crew members. Maritime festivals in each host port give visitors a chance to board the vessels, meet the crew and trainees, and experience the rich maritime heritage that these ships represent.
Gateway IPA is a light-bodied, refreshing, and drinkable, yet full of flavor. Simcoe and Mosaic hops provide intense dank and citrus flavors without being over the top. The beer is 4.4% Alcohol By Volume (ABV), and is part of Big Ditch Brewing Company’s sponsorship of Basil Port of Call.
