The fifth annual Buffalo Brewers Festival, which takes place on June 23 (4-7p) at Canalside, will feature over 20 local Buffalo & WNY breweries, making for a tap list of well over 50 beers in total. That is a lot of beer to navigate through, so I wanted to try and make things a little easier on everyone by highlighting four different breweries and each beer they are planning to bring (subject to change) each week leading up until the big dance.

So make sure you check back weekly before June 23 to see what breweries you cannot afford to miss and what must-drink beers you need to grab. If you missed last week’s preview, we took a look at New York Beer Project, woodcock Brothers, Community Beer Works and Ellicottville Brewing. Now, onto four more breweries and even more beer.

42 North Brewing

Treaty Saison: This dry and tart Saison holds true to this authentic Belgian style with flavors of light fruit and lemongrass. If you have yet to have this bad boy, now is your chance to find out why I named it one of my can’t-miss beers at last year’s fest.

Borderland IPA: A drinkable West Coast style IPA with tons of tropical fruit notes. Heavy use of Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hop make the tropical fruit aromas jump out of the glass. I don’t mean to sound like that guy, but you can never have enough IPA’s.

Resurgence Brewing

Cucumber Saison: Made with all local malt from WNY Craft Malt in Batavia and locally grown cucumbers, this farmhouse saison has a tart dill pickle taste that backs up the fresh, grassy funk. Now here is a beer that will pair perfectly with the sun and the heat.

Re-Warding IPA (Collaboration with OFW): A New England IPA with Mosaic, Zythos and Galaxy hops featuring a ripe mango nose with flavors of pineapple and papaya. Just like City Hall, you can’t fight the haze crazy. So let’s just give in. You’ll see me drinking one at some point.

Black Currant Kettle Sour (Farm to Pint Beer): A blend of berry and currants that finishes dry with a clean tartness. To be honest, I’ve had this beer at the brewery and I’m not sure that I’ll write about a more refreshing beer in these previews.

The Pils Have Eyes Imperial Pilsner (Collaboration with 4 Mile): A 7% imperial German-style pilsner dry hopped with El Dorado, Motueka, and Saaz. Let’s face it, pilsners are great and they only get better when they clock in at 7%.

Buffalo Brewing Company

1910 Czech Pilsner: Named for the year that Buffalo Brewing Company opened at 1571 Clinton St. This pils is lemon and citrus forward and very drinkable. Time to add another pils to your must-drink list.

1825 Triple Dry Hopped IPA: Named for the year that the Erie Canal was completed. This IPA is floral with a nice punch of bitter hops.

1817 Triple Dry Hopped DIPA: Subtle citrus with big dank hops. There won’t be many, if any at all, double IPA’s at the Brewers Fest, let alone triple dry hopped ones, so hop on this bandwagon while the keg is still pouring.

Five and 20 Spirits & Brewing

Grape Lakes American Wheat Ale: Brewed with NY Concord Grape juice, which imparts a rose like color and a balanced fruit flavor and aroma. This one is an easy drinker and will quench your thirst and also cleanse your palette.

Can-Am Copper IPA: This beer has a brilliant copper color with a sweet biscuit note from the NYS 1886 Aromatic malt. Generous NYS hop additions add plenty of flavor and aroma. This IPA sounds good on its own without me hyping it up, so just make sure to grab a pour come June 23.

In addition to an all WNY brewery lineup, the Buffalo Brewers Fest will have a number of special features, including local food vendors and food trucks, local ciders, meads, and a Farm to Pint tent highlighting brews made with 100 percent local ingredients. The festival will also feature a special summer brew that each brewery will make their own version of – this year is saison.
