42 North Brewing Company has officially opened its barrel house, 42 Below. This facility, adjacent to the 42 North brewery in East Aurora, will serve as the production and aging facility for 42 North’s growing barrel aged and sour beer portfolio.

“Since launching our Surveyor Series and, more recently, Vagabond, we have experienced great response to our sour beers. This facility provides 42 North a dedicated area to grow our beer portfolio and push the boundaries of our barrel aged beers“, stated Clay Keel, 42 North’s Chief Brewing Officer.

42 Below Barrel House will hold 50 oak barrels sourced from all over the World including previous white wine, red wine, bourbon, and scotch barrels. The facility allows the brewery to separate long-term sour projects from the rest of the brewery and grow their barrel program dramatically. Most of the production will center around long term sour beers, not unlike those made traditionally in Belgium using wild yeasts and bacteria cultures that have grown and been nurtured over the last two years in the 42 North lab. In addition to the sour beers 42 North sourced a number of Bourbon and Scotch barrels for special projects including the Bourbon Barrel Red Army releasing this winter. Most barrel house products will be released in 500ML bottles in the taproom starting in early 2018.

In addition to the 42 Below Barrel House, 42 North is launching “The Vagabond Society”, a member’s only club. The Vagabond Society will offer members exclusive events, first rights to barrel aged beers, and special discounts at 42 North. Only 100 memberships in to the Vagabond Society will be sold beginning on October 1st.
