The brewery and frozen custard hybrid said that they made the decision to close their doors after “some miscalculations on just how long the bureaucratic red tape would take to clear.” Owners Austin and Jared Mesiti made the announcement on Facebook.

One week removed from their first ever can release, and mere months after announcing a second taproom in downtown Buffalo, Barker’s In the Mix Brewery & Creamery have announced that they will be closing for good, and will not be reopening either of their taprooms moving forward.

The brewery and frozen custard hybrid said that they made the decision to close their doors after “some miscalculations on just how long the bureaucratic red tape would take to clear.”

Owners Austin and Jared Mesiti made the announcement on Facebook, much to the shock and chagrin of their fans and followers.

“A message to our customers, we have had an absolute pleasure serving all of you over the past (almost) 2 years. However the time has come to announce that we will not be reopening In The Mix in Barker or Buffalo. This past year has been one hell of a challenge for everyone. Unfortunately we made some miscalculations on just how long the bureaucratic red tape would take to clear. It has come to the point that we cannot afford to wait any longer. We can’t thank you all enough for being our customers and becoming our friends. Keep supporting local!” the post reads.

“This is absolutely heartbreaking to read. Your Barker location was so great and you worked so hard and the food and drinks were spectacular. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. You have the work ethic and moxie to make anything work. This is a real loss for WNY,” commenter Rebecca Stadler said.

“Very sad to hear this, we will miss you guys and your brewery very much. You were our favorite brewery,” Greg Beardsley added.

“This is incredibly heartbreaking. You guys are amazing people with a vision and passion that shone brightly in all you did. We enjoyed your beer, your food, your service so very much. It was awesome to have a place right in our nook of town. It’s so sad to see you go. Thank you for all you gave to the patrons you served, and I pray one day there’ll come a way for your doors to open once more or that whatever dream you decide to chase next comes true,” Carrie Alberalla Ruvio said.

Over the course of nearly two years, In the Mix had become known for their innovative brews, including their Drip Series of pastry stouts and Illemonati series of fruited sours. They also achieved acclaim for their adult frozen custards and burgers.

With the opening of their Buffalo location currently on hold due to the pandemic, In the Mix Brewing and Creamery, Barker’s craft beer and frozen custard hybrid, are doing the next best thing to get their beer in the hands of thirsty Western New York beer drinkers with their first ever can release. And when you’re making your introduction to the can game, one release simply won’t do. Hell, even three won’t do. In the Mix are planning four can releases on January 24 (timing subject to change due to the Buffalo Bills game) at their brewery in Barker.

For the release, there are no limits on cans, and there will be a limited breakfast sandwich menu available as well.

Among the beers set to be released are:

Drip Stout Series: Maple Snickerdoodle – A 12% latte stout brewed with milk sugar, coffee, maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla beans. ($7/single $25/4-pack)

Illemonati Series – Lemonade sour with Concord grape juice, raspberry puree, and lemon zest. ($18/4-pack)

Four Layer Stout – Milk stout brewed with marshmallow, graham cracker, and chocolate malts. ($14/4-pack)

Specialtea Blonde Ale – Blonde ale conditioned on black tea, peach tea, and lemon tea. ($12/4-pack)

Mixed Pack (1 of each, $18)

“[We’re] excited to have everything come together at the end of a tough year,” Owner Jared Mesiti says, “putting in long hours canning by hand to try to make it through this second shutdown. For people who have never tried our stuff, make the trip out for this release.”

When it came time to select what beers filled the cans for their debut release, Mesiti says the decision was easy because two of the beers they chose are two of their most popular beers, and the other two are new, so the brewery is excited to get them out into the populous.

“We decided to can so we could reach more people and adapt to this never ending cycle of indoor dining restrictions. We chose these styles because the Illemonati and Four Layer have always been some of our more popular choices. Drip and Specialtea are two of our newest styles that we are excited to share with our customers,” Mesiti says.

In the Mix is planning to open a second taproom in the former Black Button Distilling space at 149 Swan Street in Buffalo, but, as Mesiti explains, they are still waiting for approval. The location is furnished with 12 taps and an outdoor patio, which can fit up to 20 people.

“Our plan is up in the air for the initial opening of the taproom. With current restrictions on capacity and social distancing, it makes it a little harder…Our main hold up is licensing, since everything is moving a little slower right now. And boy, did they not move fast in the first place.”

In the Mix Brewing and Creamery, a unique brewery/creamery hybrid currently headquartered in Barker, are currently hoping to open their second taproom, located in the former Black Button Distilling space at 149 Swan Street in Buffalo, sometime before the end of the year. But, after initially planning to open in October, COVID-19, along with New York state guidelines, threw a monkey wrench into their plans.

Owner Jared Mesiti says that, while they are hoping to open next month, everything is tentative and set to change at a moments notice. He adds that they might have to initially open as curbside pickup only, depending on how things go with the pandemic.

“Our plan is up in the air for the initial opening of the taproom. With current restrictions on capacity and social distancing, it makes it a little harder, especially with winter approaching. Our main hold up is licensing, since everything is moving a little slower right now. And boy, did they not move fast in the first place. We are hopeful for December. However with the restrictions in place right now, we may have to start with curbside pickup only, or set time windows for people to sign up for so we make sure all regulations are being followed.”

The location is furnished with 12 taps and an outdoor patio, which can fit up to 20 people. The brewery can also accommodate up to 20 people inside as well. In addition to their own beer, they will have cider, mead and guest offerings as well. All brewing openings will continue out of Barker.

Mesiti says that the new taproom will feature dedicated taps for their Illemonati lemonade sour series and Drip Latte Stout series, in addition to cider and mead offerings.

“When people arrive to this taproom, they can expect a cozy area with barrel tables, a small covered outdoor patio (seasonal), 12 taps, savory snacking foods like flatbreads, and, of course, our signature boozy frozen custards. Our taps will be outfitted with 7-10 of our craft brews with some ciders, meads, or the occasional guest tap. Our flagship Illemonati lemonade sour series and the new Drip Latte Stout series will have dedicated taps.”

Why Buffalo, you ask? Well, the answer is obvious; Barker is quite the trek for most craft beer drinkers. Mesiti says Buffalo edged out Rochester for their second home, admitting they have been wanting to toss their hat in the ring of Buffalo beer.

“We have always wanted to open small satellite tasting rooms since Barker is such a drive for most people. We keep that as home base for production and a sit down tasting room, which is a great addition to a Niagara Wine Tour. Buffalo was definitely in our sights a little more than Rochester. Both are amazing cities for breweries, however Buffalo has been killing it recently and we wanted to get our name in that ring.”

You could really say their beer is the reason they are opening in Buffalo in the first place. As Mesiti explains, it was someone who drank their beer that made the introductions to the team at Black Button Distilling.

“We were actually approached about the opportunity by people who tried our anniversary beer package that we sold during the initial shutdown and thought we would be a good addition to the area. Upon meeting the Black Button team, we decided it would be the perfect fit for what we are looking for. A small, cozy tap room for people to come enjoy a pint, a flight or a crowler (4-packs coming soon) to go.”

Speaking of the Buffalo beer scene, Mesiti says that he wants In the Mix to be a part of it because each brewery is making everyone better with each great beer they produce.

“I don’t believe market saturation is even a conversation for Buffalo right now. Sure, there are a decent amount of breweries; all of them are cranking out some bangers. The friendly competition is great because in the end the customer wins. Each brewery is pushing the others to release the next best thing or give their variation to a trendy style.”

New Cidery Coming to Village of Hamburg

Plans for a new cidery and tasting room to be housed in the former J&M West End Inn, located at 340 Union Street in the Village of Hamburg, have been approved by the Village Board. Owner Pat O’Brien is working with Lenny Scilek, owner and operator of MackJac Hard Cider in East Aurora, on the new project, with tentative plans calling for the construction of a 2,720-square-foot multi-level cider manufacturing operation in the rear of the property, including the installation of up to four tanks. O’Brien will also operate a seven-room Airbnb, set to be housed on the second floor.
