1927 Brew House at Walden Galleria Closes

Santora’s has closed the 1927 Brew House at the Walden Galleria, opting not to renew their lease after five years. Owner Paul Santora made the announcement via social media citing recent changes in his personal life. He added that they are also choosing to not move forward with their planned brewery location in Clarence Center, citing life changes and rising costs. With the closure, Santora’s will move all brewing operations to their Transit location. Head brewer Rob Haag says he is grateful for his time spent brewing at the Galleria, which allowed him to dial in beer recipes.

Big Ditch Teams Up With YMCA on Turkey Trotter

Big Ditch Brewing has teamed up with the YMCA Buffalo Niagara for the fourth consecutive year to release Turkey Trotter, a beer brewed for the Buffalo Turkey Trot, the world’s oldest consecutively run footrace, a race that has been a Buffalo tradition since 1896. Turkey Trotter, described as a ‘perfect finish-line beer,’ is a blonde ale featuring crackery malt flavors and light fruity hops. Turkey Trotter is available on draft and in 6-packs of 12oz. cans at both Big Ditch taprooms, as well as wherever great craft beer is sold in Western New York. All cans feature a QR code that allows consumers to register for the race.

Buffalo Olde Brewery Releases Pumpkin Spice Mafia

Buffalo Olde Brewery has released Pumpkin Spice Mafia, a new beer that celebrates two of Western New York’s favorite seasons – football and fall. Pumpkin Spice Mafia is a Pumpkin Spiced Ale featuring a seasonal blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and clove, with caramel and toffee notes. “In addition to the traditional pumpkin spice flavors that everyone enjoys during the fall season, our Pumpkin Spice Mafia offers customers another beverage option that complements Buffalo Bills football, changing leaves, and the crisp fall air,” said Buffalo Olde Brewery co-owner Bill Anderson. Pumpkin Spice Mafia is available now.

Bottle Rocket Beer Mile Back For 2025

Bottle Rocket’s annual Beer Mile returns on October 12. What is a beer mile? It’s pretty simple – drink 4 beers and run 4 laps in alternating fashion as quickly as you can. It’s a 1-mile drinking event that combines running and speed drinking. It will take place on a 1/4 mile course surrounding Bottle Rocket. Space is limited and participation costs $30.26 (tax and fees included). There are three heats – 10 am, 10:30 am and 11 am. Beer served during the event will be Genesee Cream Ale. You can sign up for the Beer Mile here. The event is limited to a total of 90 participants.

These pub-exclusive seltzers are all gluten free and are available at all EBC locations.
Woodcock Brothers Closes Wilson Location For Season

It’s that time of year, and with the colder weather and snow on the horizon, Woodcock Brothers Brewery has closed their Wilson location for the season and will reopen the taproom in March. “This isn’t goodbye forever, just our last night open in 2025 before we take a break until March,” the brewery said. “If you’ve got ideas for how we can make 2026 our best season yet, we’re all ears.” Woodcock Brothers will continue normal operations in North Tonawanda.

Woodcock Brothers Brewery is planning to reopen its Wilson location, which has been closed for most of the winter season, as a “reimagined taproom experience.”

“While our original hope was to reopen just as you remembered us, we’ve decided to take a slightly new approach — one that allows us to get our doors open sooner rather than later, so we can reconnect with the amazing community that helped build this place from the ground up. We are ready to get these taps flowing,” the brewery said.

“We’re bringing Wilson back— as a tasting room experience. That means a relaxed, welcoming vibe, a thoughtfully curated lineup of our house-made craft beers (brewed at our Wurlitzer location), limited domestic beer and seltzer options, a reduced food menu, and those lakeside vibes we’ve all been missing.”

Moving forward, the taproom will serve Woodcock beer brewed at their Wurlitzer brewhouse, limited domestic beer and seltzer options (there won’t be serving liquor or wine), along with a reduced food menu as Wilson will not feature a full kitchen.

“There won’t be a full kitchen as before, and we won’t be offering liquor or wine at this time — but what we will have is the heart and soul of Woodcock: great beer, good people, and a space to gather and create something new, together,” the brewery said.

The brewery will reopen on May 15.

“Now more than ever, we need your support. Your visits, your word of mouth, and your presence mean everything to small businesses like ours — and we can’t wait to welcome you back,” the brewery added. “While you’re in the area, don’t forget to check out the awesome local shops in our plaza — let’s lift up this community one stop at a time.”

Woodcock Wilson will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 12 – 6 pm.

“We’re kicking things off with a fresh tasting room vibe, a tight, tasty menu, and the same great beer (and people) you know and love. Think chill hangs, great community, and new memories just waiting to be made,” Woodcock added. “We’re starting simple, keeping it cozy, and doing our best to grow this baby right. Come through, show us some love, and let’s raise a glass to being back on the lake.”

This experimental IPA, which at one point was one of the most sought-after beers on the local scene, clocks in at 6.5% and features Azacca, Warrior, Mosaic, and Citra hops, as well as a dry-hop combo of Citra, Cascade, and Triumph. Expect tropical fruit, tangerine zest, and a clean, crisp and balanced bitter finish. XPA is on draft and in 4-pack cans at Woodcock’s North Tonawanda taproom.

Froth Brewing Creates New Sour Beer For Charity

Froth Brewing is utilizing one of its strongest assets – its Liquid Lollipop beer series – to give back. They have brewed a new 6.5% smoothie style fruited sour with concord grape, dark sweet cherry and vanilla ice cream in collaboration with the Western New York chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. A portion of proceeds from beer sales will go to benefit their work in the fight against Alzheimer’s. This Liquid Lollipop is available on draft and in crowlers at Froth’s taproom.

Go Off the Wall At Frequentem Brewing This Friday

This Friday (April 18), Frequentem Brewing is bringing back one of my favorite beers of last year, Do A Kickflip, a collaboration with Smoldered Society, a light lager with Yuzu. Smoldered Society is also taking over several taps with World Police Double IPA (fermented on over 90 lbs. of pink grapefruit), Simulated Reality Fruited Sour and Strike Anywhere Pilsner. DJ Mike West will be spinning pop punk tunes (7-10) and Half Luna Empanadas (5-9pm) will be on hand serving food. The event is free and open to the public.

There are many special local beers, a number of which hold a special place in my heart. Woodcock Brothers XPA is one of those beers, a beer that I would regularly drive all the way out to Wilson for and a beer that I would regularly wait in line for. In beer news I wasn’t expecting, XPA is back, albeit in a limited capacity, in cans and on draft.

“After years on hiatus, our XPA is making a limited-time comeback,” the brewery said of the new version of the 6.5% experimental IPA, which features Azacca, Warrior, Mosaic, and Citra hops, as well as a dry hop of Citra, Cascade, and Triumph. “Expect bright tropical notes with a subtle tangerine twist, balanced by a clean, slightly bitter finish.”

Here’s a bit of Western New York beer history for those that may not know – XPA, at one time, was the hottest, most du jour, beer in the area. Craft aficionados from across the land, myself included, would descend upon the tiny hamlet of Wilson, New York, head down to Woodcock’s little corner of town and stand in line awaiting its release. BBL co-founder Scott and I were often two of those queuers, waiting to get our hands on the latest version of XPA.

Early versions of XPA were the best beers I’ve personally ever had from Woodcock, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that thinking. I first fell in love with the beer with version 4 and it was off to the races from there. Version 5 was better, and then 6 was even better than that. Versions 6.1, 6.2 and Galaxy DDH were good and kept the line moving, versions 7, 8 and 9 were great, but it was version 10 that returned the XPA series to banger status. In my opinion, this was the best version since 6. But from there, 16 was the only other noteworthy version in my eyes and the brewery stopped releasing regular versions of XPA shortly thereafter.

I have great memories thanks to XPA – driving up to Wilson with Scott, parking lot tailgates, line beers, hanging out with then-head brewer Matt Redpath, enjoying an incredible wood-fired pizza at the taproom and everything in between. It’s a beer I am happy to have back and I am incredibly excited to taste what Woodcock has in store for me with this new version.

XPA can be found at Woodcock Brothers’ North Tonawanda taproom. If you remember, their Wilson taproom is still closed for the season.

Now for the self-promotion part: if you partake in some of the new Woodcock Brothers XPA, I’d love to know what you think of it. Call the Buffalo Beer League hotline at 716-486-BEER, leave a voicemail and let me know.

Woodcock Brothers Brewing in Wilson Closes for Winter
