Illumination Meadery to Close on Niagara Street

Illumination Meadery, who operate out of Mortalis Brewing’s taproom on Niagara Street, have announced plans to close, citing changes in the lives of the owners, rising costs and decreased consumer demand for craft beverages. “We are very thankful that Mortalis took a chance on us and accepted our partnership offer to share the space. We hope that we were able to teach people a little more about mead, and maybe we even made some new mead fans,” the meadery says. Their final sendoff will be at CollaBEERation Fest on April 5. They still have a few kegs on tap in the taproom, plus bottles and glassware to go.

Brickyard Brewing’s Stained Glass Vol. 1 Returns

Brickyard Brewing’s Stained Glass Vol. 1 Barrel Aged Belgian Quad has made a return, this time in 375ml. corked and caged bottles. The 8.8% was aged in a blend of rum and bourbon barrel and features notes of dark fruit like raisins, plums and dark cherries. Bottles of Stained Glass Vol. 1 are limited (only 8 cases), along with a few kegs for retail, and are available now at Brickyard’s Lewiston taproom, as well as select retailers around Western New York.

Old First Ward Breweries Announced 4 The Ward Collab

Four Old First Ward breweries – Resurgence Brewing, Briarbrothers Brewing, Old First Ward Brewing and Frequentem Brewing – have announced a new collab – 4 The Ward – which features each location brewing their own take on a pale ale to support the Old First Ward Community Center. Start at any brewery, order a pint of 4 The Ward, and receive a punch card. Visit the other breweries, collect punches, complete all four, turn in your card, and at the end of the promotion (now through St. Patrick’s weekend), each brewery will donate to the Old First Ward Community Center for each completed card.

Williamsville’s 12 Gates Brewing Company to Close

12 Gates Brewing Company in Williamsville has announced that they are closing their doors after 9 years. The brewery made the announcement via their social media that they are closing, effectively immediately. “From the very first brew to the countless pints shared, every moment has been special, and we couldn’t have made it this far without the incredible support of our loyal customers, staff, and the community. You’ve helped us craft more than just beer — you’ve helped us create memories that will last a lifetime,” the brewery says. 12 Gates first opened their doors in 2015. Their sister location, 12 Gates of EVL, closed last summer.

Hofbrauhaus to Hold March Marzen Tapping

Hofbrauhaus Buffalo is teaming up with the Witches of the Moonlight for their March Marzen barrel tapping on March 6 (6pm). Die Haus Band will perform, Witches of the Moonlight will host a parade and dance performance inspired by the Wolfshager Hexenbrut witches of Germany, and a barrel of Märzen will be tapped. The beer is a smooth and drinkable, amber-colored beer with a rich malty character and a hint of hops. Mention you’re dining for the witches and 10% of your pre-taxed bill will be donated to the YWCA of the Niagara Frontier. You can make reservations on OpenTable.

CollaBEERation Festival Announces First Collab Beers

CollaBEERation Festival, which takes place at the Powerhouse on Apr. 5, have announced the first round of collab beers that will be poured at the event. This includes Southern Tier Brewing Meet the Bockers Maibock, Pod City Beer Labs Bollywood Wit (Belgian-style witbier with traditional Indian spices), Eli Fish Brewing Mr. Pink’s F**k All That Gose (pink lemonade gose with pink Himalayan sea salt), Buffalo Olde I Remember Mama… Italian Pilsner and 42 North Brewing PeeWee’s Beer Adventure Dark Lager (aged in Tequila barrels). Genesee Brewing’s annual summer staple Rudy Red Kolsch is back for 2024 and new this year, the iconic brew will be available in 24oz. single cans. You’ll still be able to find the grapefruit kolsch in traditional 12oz. can 12 packs, but now you’ll be able to find the beer in bigger cans as well. Ruby Red Kolsch is a bright-golden ale boasting tart grapefruit flavors with a bready malt body and mild hop bitterness. Genesee Brew House Brewmaster Dean Jones created this summer brew for its German heritage and fun taste profile. Look for Ruby Red Kolsch wherever great craft beer is sold soon.

Homebrew Sessions No. 1 at Woodcock Brothers Brewing

Woodcock Brothers Brewing in Wilson is hosting a homebrew day demonstration on Mar. 16 (9am), featuring samples of beers, Q&A with the brewers, and more. At 9am, they will begin their first small batch brew (5 gallons) and then, at 1pm, they will be featuring a second demonstration of another brew (5 gallons). They will be brewing an American Wheat Ale with tangerine and also a California Common (steam beer). The beer brewed will be available for sampling at the next brew session. Thawfest 2024 Coming to Buffalo Riverworks

Believe it or not, it will soon be time to raise a toast to the end of yet another long Buffalo winter and what better place to do so than at Thawfest at Buffalo Riverworks on April 26. Big Ditch x Strangebird to Release Strangeburner IPA

Big Ditch Brewing and Rochester’s Strangebird have teamed up on Strangeburner IPA, a new blend version of Big Ditch’s flagship Hayburner IPA and Strangebird’s Gouden Boom Belgian Strong Ale, which will be released Mar. 15 at Big Ditch. The end result is a beer that is Belgian golden, elegantly tart, moderately bitter, and gently sweet, with a lingering sour. Strangeburner will be available in 4-packs to go and on draft.

Southern Tier Brewing, Perry’s Ice Cream Team on New Beer

Southern Tier Brewing Company has once again collaborated with Perry’s Ice Cream on Orange Twist, an 8.6% ABV Imperial Ale that features notes of orange sherbet swirled with Perry’s signature vanilla ice cream flavor. In addition to being on tap at Southern Tier’s five Taproom locations, the new craft brand will be arriving on shelves wherever great craft beer is sold. Orange Twist will be available at Southern Tier Buffalo on Mar. 15 with $5 pours.

Third Annual KBC – Kegs, Barrels, and Crafts at 500 Pearl

On April 7 (12-3p), the third annual KBC – Kegs, Barrels, and Crafts, a beer, wine and whiskey event featuring more than 50 vendors from Western New York, will take place at 500 Pearl. In addition to craft beer wine, KBC offers samplings of spirits, wine, cider, seltzers, canned cocktails and more. There will also be small business vendors stationed throughout the event and food options available for purchase from featured vendors. The official KBC after party will be hosted at Patrick’s Rooftop. Williamsville’s RationAles is celebrating their first year in business with a party on Mar. 1 (5pm). Pearl Street Brewery, Riverworks Brewing Drop New Hazy IPA

The Pearl Street family of breweries has dropped a new hazy IPA, Charging the Storm, which is available at both Pearl Street and Riverworks. This 8% IPA, brewed with Idaho 7 and dry-hopped with Riwaka and Nelson, features a big smooth tropical fruit bouquet with a full bodied smooth finish. Charging the Storm is available in 16oz. cans at both Pearl Street and Riverworks and is also on draft at the latter. It is available now.

Engagement Party for Community Beer Works, Thin Man Brewery

After the news that Community Beer Works is acquiring Thin Man Brewery, they are making it official with an engagement party on Mar. 2 (12pm) at 520 Seventh St. The special day will feature a dock sale at noon with cans, kegs and merchandise, an exclusive beer release (The Whale/Peanut Butter Jenkins Imperial Stout cuvee), games, giveaways, music, and more beer. CBW will acquire all of the assets of Thin Man, pending approval, including brand rights, recipes, distribution rights, and capital assets at 166 Chandler Street. CBW is set to continue brewing, marketing, and distributing both CBW and Thin Man catalog of beers.

Windy Brew Set to Celebrate 7^th Anniversary

Windy Brew is celebrating seven years in Strykersville and is celebrating on Mar. 2 (5pm). The party will feature live music from Rob Koepf, beers from the past on tap, and beer and food specials all day long. Windy Brew offers a variety of beers from light ales and seasonal brews to IPAs and stouts. They are also home to the Windy Brew Custom Brew Center, Western New York’s only custom “make your own beer” center, where customers can get the total experience of learning about the brewing process without having to buy the equipment.

A bigger and better Buffalo on Tap festival returns to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on February 25 (1-4pm, 6:30–9:30pm). Tickets include tasting glass and unlimited refills of more than 150 craft beers, hard seltzers and ciders from 12 Gates Brewing, 42 North Brewing, Buffalo Brewing, Community Beer Works, Four Mile, Southern Tier, West Shore Brewing, Woodcock Brothers and more. Habitat for Humanity Buffalo’s Hammer & Ales at Barrel Factory

Habitat for Humanity Buffalo’s annual Hammer & Ales fundraiser returns to the Barrel Factory on March 2 (5:30pm) and will feature food & drink tastings, auctions, games, and more. The event is part of Habitat’s The House Beer Built campaign, a yearly fundraiser that sees the organization partner with regional breweries, distilleries, and restaurants to raise money to build or renovate a new home. Since 2016, The House Beer Built has funded the construction of three homes, built by volunteers from local breweries. Tickets for the event ($45) include admission and tastings. Windy Brew to Celebrate Sixth Anniversary

Windy Brew is taking a weekend to celebrate their sixth anniversary on March 3 – 6. There will be a beer release on Friday and Saturday will feature live music with Kilo and Charlie. New Self-Pour Taproom Coming to Tonawanda

Tap That Tap Room will bring the first self-pour taproom to Tonawanda at 363 Delaware Ave. Tap That plans to offer 30 self-serve taps of beer, wine, cider and seltzer, including a variety of local brands, an “elevated” bar food menu that will focus on shareables, space to seat 60 people at 15 tables and additional space at a bar rail. Tentative plans also call for a patio out front that will be dog-friendly. The self-pour system allows customers to pour as little as an ounce, and will offer malt beverages and mixed drinks. 15th Annual Art of Beer Coming to Niagara Arts & Cultural Center 

The 15th Annual Art of Beer, a beer and food tasting event, returns to Niagara Falls on March 3 (6pm). Tickets are $40 and include tastings of local beer, wine, cider and spirits, featuring more than 45 tasting stations with over 75 menu items, culinary pairings from local area restaurants, and live entertainment on 5 stages. There will also be a live homebrewing demonstration by Niagara Tradition Home Brew, VIP Lounge and beer art, fashion, music, and live demos. The event also serves as a fundraiser to support the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center. You can purchase tickets here.

Lafayette Brewing Company Transitions to All Lager

Lafayette Brewing will officially transition all of the taps at their Washington Street taproom to all lager this week. Plans call for Louise Blonde Lager, Roll For Damage (Mango Habanero) Lager, Pheelz Good Sour Lager (Blackberry, Blueberry, Pink Guava), Bethune Dark Lager, Disco Platypus Pale Lager, Skeet Skeet Peach Wheat Lager, Cellar Dweller Kellerbier, Millenial Falcon IPL, Ron Mexico- Mexican Lager (w/lime), Hit It From the Bock and Trainwreck. “We are offering 11 different lagers from classics to contemporary using seven different lager strains,” Head Brewer Jason Dunshie said. “We will be the only brewery in NYS to offer all lagers (as far as we know).”

Pizza Plant to Host Ukraine Benefit With Imperial Stouts

On March 13, Pizza Plant will host their first ever The Ukrainian Freedom Imperial Stout Celebration at their Transit Road location. For the event, previously known as the “R$&@#%ns Are Coming,” Pizza Plant will donate a portion of beer sales directly to the Buffalo Ukrainian Cultural Center (options will be available for all to make individual donations as well). Ukrainian flags will be given to guests who purchase a flight. Beers include Resurgence Brewing Genus Cocos, 2019 Aslin Moonshield, Other Half Imperial Stout, 2018 & 2019 Founder KBS and CBS and 2019 & 2021 Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout.

97 Rock Home Show Happy Hour Returns to Buffalo Home Show

Not only is the Buffalo Home Show returning to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center this year (March 11-13), so too is The 97 Rock Home Show Happy Hour. The event, hosted by Tom Ragan from Shredd & Ragan In The Morning, features craft beer, cider wine, games, trivia and more, each Friday night (5-7pm), free for all Home show attendees 21 and over. 42 North Brewing and Community Beer Works will be pouring different craft beers each Friday. Community Beer Works Going Back to Saturday Mornings

Community Beer Works are taking us all back when we looked forward to Saturday mornings with the release of Saturday Morning Cartoons Australian-Style Pale Ale on March 11 (3pm). This beer is brewed with Galaxy, Sabro and Mosaic hops for flavors and aromas of passion fruit, mango and berry blend with a candy-like sweetness in the finish. Beers for Ukraine at Southern Tier Brewing

All day on March 10, Southern Tier Brewing will host Beers for Ukraine at The Empty Pint in Lakewood (3-9pm) and at their Buffalo location (11am – 10pm). $3 from every beer purchase will be donated to the CARE Ukraine Crisis Fund, which is providing aid in urgently delivering needed items such as: water, food, hygiene kits and ongoing support to children, families and the elderly in Ukraine.

Cider Brunch, Rye BA Awesome Jenkins at Thin Man

This Friday, Thin Man will release bottles of Rye Barrel Aged Awesome Jenkins, a 14% imperial stout that spent two years in Willet Rye barrels for notes of tootsie rolls, marshmallow and spice, a velvety mouthfeel and warming alcoholic finish. This beer will be available at all Thin Man locations.

Thin Man Elmwood is also welcoming BlackBird Cider Works for their second ever Cider Brunch on March 13. BlackBird’s Red Barn, Estate Reserve and Chandler Street Cherry ciders will be available, along with Thin Man beers, cider-infused brunch menu specials and cider-infused mimosas and cocktails.

Pressure Drop Releases Latest Episode of Space Monkey Saga

Pressure Drop Brewing is continuing their Space Monkey IPA saga with Episode 7: Space Monkey Awakens. This 9% imperial IPA is brewed with Mosaic and Simcoe hops and is deceptively crushable. It’s crisp, clean and dry with balanced bitter finish. Cans of Episode 7 will be available at Wegmans, as well as wherever great craft beer is sold, this week. Pressure Drop is also expected to announce the opening of their new Elmwood Avenue taproom in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to their social channels for updates.

Griffon Gastropub to Open New Brewery in Lewiston

The owners of Griffon Gastropub, who have locations in East Aurora, Clarence, Niagara Falls and Lewiston, have announced plans to open a brewery at 115 S. Water St. in Lewiston. The new spot, which will be called Griffon Brewery and Gastropub, will supply the Griffon chain with its own brews. Work is currently underway in the kitchen at the location, which ownership hopes to have open by May 8. And while work continues at the brewery, Griffon House on Center Street in Lewiston will close.

Tickets Still Remain for Community Beer Works’ Thee Barleywine Classic

Limited tickets still remain for the second annual Thee Barleywine Classic, an intimate gathering of select craft breweries coming together to celebrate and showcase the wonderful style of barleywine, which takes place at CBW on February 27 (12-4pm). Tickets are $45 and include 10 tastings, custom tasting glass, bowl of chili with cornbread and live music. Featured breweries include Bolton Landing Brewing, New York Beer Project, Old First Ward, Prison City Brewing, Rare Form, Resurgence Brewing and more.

Other Half Brewing at Seneca One Tower is Back Open

The doors at Other Half Brewing’s Buffalo location at Seneca One Tower are finally back open after the location received the proper licensing. The taproom will be open Tuesday (2-7p), Wednesday (2-7p), Thursday (2 –-7p), Friday (2-7p) and Saturday (11a-7p) and closed Sunday and Monday. Hofbrauhaus Tapping Marzen For March

For their monthly keg tapping, Hofbrauhaus Buffalo will break into the barrels of marzen on March 2. This springtime marzen pours burnt orange with aromas of bread and toasted crust. There is a slight floral spiciness from the hops, though the beer drinks smooth and finishes clean and crisp. Hofbrauhaus recommends pairing it with the Schweinbraten. Windy Brew to Celebrate Fifth Anniversary

Windy Brew is taking a weekend to celebrate their milestone fifth anniversary on March 4 – 5. Community Beer Works, Pressure Drop Brewing to Release New Collab

From the same brewing minds that brought us such beers as Knives Out IPA and Planet Smashers Berliner Weisse, Community Beer Works and Pressure Drop Brewing, comes Fat Rips Double IPA, which will be released March 7 (12pm) at CBW’s taproom. The beer, brewed with copious amounts of Mosaic and Simcoe hops, will be available on draft and in cans to go. “The fast-acting brew delivers energizing, dreamy and euphoric feelings,” the description reads. CBW will also release King Larry Imperial Cream Ale, an imperial version of their house cream ale Amazing Larry, on draft and in cans as well.

Fattey Beer Co. Eyes New Third Location in Southtowns

Bottle shop / beer bar hybrid Fattey Beer Co., which currently has locations in Hamburg and Buffalo, are close to opening a third location in Orchard Park, expected to be located at 4226 N. Buffalo St., two doors down from Kaylena Marie’s Bakery. Tentative plans call for the 1,900 square foot space is expected to feature indoor and outdoor seating, separated by a garage door, in addition to 500 available beers at all times, including 16 taps, and Fattey Beer Co.’s trademark big beer fridge and a cooler dedicated to $3 beers. Owner Nik Fattey is eyeing a spring opening.
