If you’re reading this, chances are high that you drink craft beer. And if you drink craft beer, chances are even higher than you listen to music while doing so. Music and beer is perhaps the most powerful sensory pairing imaginable, one that can conjure memories regardless of time passed.
First up is Golden Tear, a West Coast-style IPA brewed for Saturday’s Flogging Molly concert. The beer, whose name is plucked from the liner notes of the band’s song “What’s Left of the Flag?” features notes of dank pine and resin and light malt sweetness. It’s an extremely drinkable, old school IPA worthy of firing you up before an energetic show.

And if you want some of Golden Tear, cans and draft are ONLY available at Brewed & Bottled.

Brewed & Bottled Owner Chris Budde says that when he was first approached by Thin Man about the Summer Concert Series, it was a no brainer.

“Mike Shatzel and the Thin Man crew approached me with the idea to create a collaboration for Lewiston’s Summer Concert Series,” he explains. “In the past, we’ve had pop-ups and tappings, but this is next level. The idea was awesome and, of course, I said yes! I’m ecstatic to be a part of this and to have named Golden Tear after Flogging Molly’s song, “What’s Left of The Flag.” I am humbled to be able to have the Brewed & Bottled logo on a can label. How cool is that?”

Thin Man’s Rudy Watkins says that this new collaboration was born out of a mutual love of craft beer and music.

“It just kind of came about through conversation,” he says. “We’re huge lovers of live music and this seemed like a great way to celebrate it. We’ve worked with Brewed & Bottled in past years, mostly doing tastings at their old place when there was an event at Artpark. This is just kind of an outgrowth of that.”

Current plans calls for four collaborative releases this summer with more information on those to be announced in the coming weeks and months. Budde says that the Summer Concert Series will be a continuing series that we’re going to expand even further next summer. Watkins further explains that when it comes to future beers in this series, “you can expect tasty, refreshing beverages and great label artwork.”

“We have four releases planned, so far,” Budde explains. “I can tell you that the next beer (draft and 4-pack) will be dropping before the Barenaked Ladies show on July 5.”

That beer is Not A Real Fur Coat, an easy drinking 7% NEIPA was brewed to match the incessant good-vibe, kitschy, 90s nostalgia of Canada’s Barenaked Ladies.

Music makes beer taste better, plain and simple. It’s a scientific fact. In the world’s largest ever multi-sensory experiment, by matching the tastings, aromas and flavors to instruments, notes and soundscapes, Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, researched 3000 people’s reactions to taste, sound and light while drinking a selection of beer. The study found that changes in both color and sound can immediately change taste by nearly 10%.

For the study, Spence paired American wheat beers Goose Island 312 and Blue Moon with Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” concluding ‘both wheat beers suggested lazy summer evenings, the sun draining slowly over the distant skyline; and Blue Moon edged ahead through its, and the music’s, richly sweet timbre and notes of dreamy melancholia.’ He also paired Belgian blonde Duvel with The Pixies’ “Debaser.” ‘The grunge band’s hyper-ventilating guitar and surrealist lyrics set against Duvel’s frenetic blond bubbles and throat-grabbing, lip-wiring flavors.’

“This is a next level moment for me, one of the coolest things to have happened yet in the history of B&B and for me as a beer lover,” Budde says. “High five to the Thin Man crew for being awesome to us.”

“Why do they go together?” Watkins asks of the beer and music pairing. “What’s better than watching a band while enjoying a frosty beverage? I’ve always tried to imbue beers with music I love. This is a great opportunity to work on that!”

But residents of Lewiston don’t worry, because the bottle shop / beer bar hybrid is relocating to another part of town – 442 Center Street, between Brickyard Brewing Company and the historic Frontier House. While they do not have a firm timetable, Owner Chris Budde is hoping for a spring reopening. Brewed & Bottled have been in business since August 5, 2016.

Brewed & Bottled has been temporarily closed at 402 Center St. since January 12.

“The building we will be located in was originally a firehouse in the early 1900s and is currently being completely redesigned and renovated,” Budde says. “It’s very important for us to stay in Lewiston. Not only do I live in the community, we add a truly unique experience to Center St. Before I opened the shop, I had always wanted a bottle shop and beer bar here in Lewiston – so I made that happen. I honestly cannot think of Lewiston without Brewed and Bottled. This is where we are meant to be!”

The move was necessitated after the owners of Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen purchased the plaza with plans for expansion. Budde explains that while he was initially planning on keeping the shop in the plaza, in the end that idea just wasn’t feasible.

“Originally, we would be moving to the end of the plaza and continuing to operate on the property,” he explains. “After careful consideration and various floor plans, we could not make our business fit in the space that was offered to us. The owner of the property that we are relocating to has great enthusiasm for and dedication to his future tenants, we were impressed and inspired by his positivity and decided that’s where we would like to be.”

Budde can’t help but reminisce a bit about their old space, saying “I’ll miss the memories that we made in the original location. Many beer firsts for Niagara County happened in that space!” But looking ahead to the new location, he shares his overwhelming excitement about his new neighbors, especially a brewery. “I’m looking forward to having a brand new build out and great neighbors. We will be joined by Sgt. Peppers Hot Sauces Etc. and Mad Hatter Tea House. We’re between the Frontier House (built in 1824 and currently going to be redeveloped after years of sitting vacant), one of the most historic and iconic buildings in Lewiston and our friends at the Brickyard Brewing. Lewiston’s two beer-centric businesses will be next door neighbors. I’m also very excited to have a backyard beer garden. We had a great space up front at our original location; however we now have the opportunity to create a great green and private space.”

[Additionally], Other Half Brewing can drops will continue when we reopen and now we [will] have the ability to collaborate with Brickyard Brewing easier,” he adds.

“Our timeframe depends on the building and licensing of our new space,” he admits. “We’re anticipating spring, but do not want to give a firm timeline yet.”

Lewiston’s Brewed & Bottled Bottle Shop Closes, Moving to New Location

Lewiston’s Brewed & Bottled Craft Beer Shop has closed the doors at their original location at 402 Center Street and is relocating to 442 Center St., after Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen announced plans to expand at the location. Owner Chris Budde said he made the decision to move after ‘careful consideration and various floor plans,’ none of which he felt they could make work. He adds that customers can except ‘the old B&B vibe with some refining and tweaks,’ including a private backyard beer garden. Though no official timeline has been established, he is hoping to reopen in 2-3 months.

As I write this, I’m indifferent. Sure, it’s Friday, which is awesome and we have Fruity Funky Friday at Coles and Goodbar and Funk Fest at New York Beer Project on tap for tonight, but that also means there is only today, then the weekend, left for Buffalo Beer Week. While I won’t entirely miss just how freaking busy I have been on the daily, I look forward to being able to take naps again. Yes, I’m old.

Regardless, there are tons of events going on today. From beer festivals and sour beer events to tap takeovers and beer walks, there’s something for everything tonight. If you want to go out and just grab a beer and listen to some live music, then that’s on the docket for today as well. Take a look for yourself.

Today is also the final day to win some free beer from my friends at Buffalo Brewing. And it’s easy to get in the running. They are giving away a case of beer – fresh cans of 1932 Oat Cream IPA and 1906 New England IPA – now through 11pm tonight. All you have to do is visit them on Instagram (@buffalobrewingcompany), follow them and tag three friends in the comments. If you win you can pick up your beer on Saturday during retail hours. It’s just that easy. A few clicks and you could be one case of beer richer.

Woodcock Brothers is gathering up over 20 New York State breweries serving all fall seasonal style brews at their Wilson headquarters, along with live music (Experimental Sandwich, 7pm), food trucks, distilleries, ciders and lawn games at the third annual NY Fall Beer Festival (6pm). $3 per drink ticket, good for a 5oz pour.

Celebrate the 10th Anniversary Buffalo Beer Week in the beautiful Village of Lewiston. Start at Brewed & Bottled Craft Beer Shop (5pm), where you’ll taste beer and learn about history of craft beer in the area. Sample beers at select village establishments from there. Pay as you go.

In honor of Sour Beer Day, New York Beer Project are funking up the taps (in a good way) at the first ever Funk Fest: A Celebration of Sours (5pm). They are pulling out all the sour stops as, not only are they returning four of their most beloved sours, they are debuting half a dozen new brews, including a sour take on a classic refreshing beverage, four Berliner Weisse variants born out of a friendly competition between NYBP brewers, and a barrel aged sour.

Pizza Plant Transit are tapping a few Mortalis Brewing beers (5pm). They are featuring Orion Double IPA (Mosaic, Citra & Nelson hops) and Venus Strawberry Fig Newton Milk Stout.

Osborn Nash will be performing at Big Inlet (6pm), Tommy Link will take to the stage at Four Mile (6pm) and Qwister will perform at 12 Gates (8pm).

Are you a sour beer lover? This day is perfect for you! Enjoy a selection of session, fruity and barrel aged sours at Mr. Goodbar and Coles in honor of Sour Beer Day at Fruity Funky Friday (5pm). Mr. Goodbar will tap Gun Hill City Island Gose, Discord Disconnected Sour IPA, DuClaw My, My, My Key Lime Pie Sour IPA, Almanac Cherry Sournova and more, while Coles will tap Upstate Lemonade Sour, LIC Beer Project Gal Friday (Cherry & Vanilla) Berliner Weisse, Sixpoint Firecracker Sour IPA, Thin Man Minkey Boodle and bottles of Crooked Stave. Free entry. A la carte pints.

Elsewhere during Buffalo Beer Week, as has become custom, Buffalo Brewing Company will be open every single day. Pearl Street (seasonal beers with Beer Week booklet) and Lafayette Brewing are offering $3.50 pints all Beer Week long, and score $2 off pints at Pizza Plant (both locations) and $4 pints at Riverworks Brewing with coupons you can find in the official Beer Week book. Also, Blackbird Cider Works have daily specials, Hamm & Fattey’s and Fattey Beer Co. are running select $3 pint specials (check Buffalobeerweek.com for more details) and Five & 20 will be donating a portion of the proceeds from their specially priced Beer of the Month to Habitat for Humanity during the entire course of Buffalo Beer Week.

Brewed & Bottled Craft Beer Shop, Lewiston’s one and only beer store and one of Western New York’s premier craft beer shops, will close their doors on March 24. Owner Chris Budde announced in a Facebook post that they have lost their lease and are being forced to vacate their current location at 402 Center Street. Brewed & Bottled have been in business since August 5, 2016.

“To our customers and friends, it is with disappointed, heavy hearts that we announce that Brewed And Bottled Craft Beer Shop will be vacating our location at 402 Center Street in Lewiston,” Budde’s announcement read. “We have lost our lease. While our plans have always been to remain in the plaza, unfortunately, we are at the mercy of circumstances out of our control. Our last day of business at our current location will be March 24. Please come hang out with us and help us give our first home a proper sendoff!”

“We absolutely love Lewiston and have no intentions of abandoning our community. We’re currently exploring other opportunities in the area and hope to be back in action as soon as possible.”

The response to Brewed & Bottled’s closing has, aside from mostly sad and sorrowful, been overwhelmingly positive and full of support from the community at large. Budde adds that it’s been difficult to process all of the support they have received in these trying times.

‘I confidently feel you’ll come back bigger and better. Keep the vision strong!’ one commenter on Facebook said. ‘Thanks for the amazing service and kindnesses you’ve shown us. Just know that wherever you go we will follow!’ said another, while others said ‘thank you for all your service…this is just a speed bump to a great future’ and ‘I’m sure this will just be a bump in the road, and will not stop you from finding something bigger & better in the near future.’

“There aren’t enough words to express how grateful we are for all the support from our customers over the last two and a half years, and it is with absolute fire and enthusiasm that we look forward to the next chapter in store for our beer family,” Budde concludes. “Stay tuned for further updates.”
