In celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Shea’s Performing Arts Center and Hartman’s Distilling Company announce a special edition of Hartman’s Bourbon – Shea’s Centennial Blend 285 Special.

This limited engagement is in honor of Shea’s Buffalo Theatre founder, Michael Shea, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Shea’s Buffalo “Wonder” Theatre. At Shea’s, this bourbon was uniquely aged with the help of Hartman’s Distilling Company and the Shea’s Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ. For the entire 2024-2025 season, four different barrels of bourbon were nestled within the organ chambers of the Mighty Wurlitzer 285 Special, absorbing the rich tones and music of the Shea’s Buffalo Theatre centennial groundbreaking season – infusing every note and acoustic vibration into the charred rye and wheated bourbon barrels themselves.

“We have done some exciting aging projects before but nothing with this magnitude of an undertaking,” Justin Hartman, president & co-founder of Hartman’s, said. “Aging four 52 Gallon barrels of bourbon in the eaves of the historical Shea’s Theatre, perfectly tucked between the two 30-foot Wurlitzer organ pipes, was an incredible feat. The massive sonic vibrations caused by the organ pipes will force the bourbon to interact with the charred and toasted layer inside the barrel. I stood in between these organ pipes with earplugs when a low chord was struck, it shook my soul. Imagine an entire year of that exposure!”

The barrels were recently carefully removed from the Wurlitzer chambers, rolled out of Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, and transported to Hartman’s Distilling Company for bottling.

“For nearly 100 years, Shea’s Buffalo Theatre has been a place where artistry, history, and community converge,” Brian Higgins, president & CEO of Shea’s Performing Arts Center said. “Partnering with Hartman’s Distilling to create the Shea’s Centennial Blend is a fitting tribute to that legacy, blending the craftsmanship of bourbon making with the power and richness of Shea’s Mighty Wurlitzer. Just as every performance leaves an imprint on our audiences, every note of music has now left its mark on this once-in-a-lifetime spirit. It’s a celebration of where Shea’s has been and where we’re going as we begin our second century.”

The public is invited to a release party for the Shea’s Centennial Blend 285 Special taking place at Hartman’s, 5:30 – 7:30pm, Friday, September 5. This will be the first opportunity to purchase the limited edition before they hit store shelves. Shea’s Centennial Blend will also be served at Matinee Buffalo and at Shea’s Performing Arts Center bars, while supplies last.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ was installed at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre in December of 1925 and played during the Shea’s Buffalo Theatre grand opening on January 16, 1926. Built at the Wurlitzer Company in North Tonawanda, the Shea’s Buffalo organ is the last Wurlitzer “285 Special” styled organ in the world.

More details can be found on Shea’s website at: www.Sheas.org/wurlitzer-blend.

With less than 0.5% ABV, Downshift brings the flavor and lets you bring the party.” Downshift N/A IPA is exclusively available on draft at all of Southern Tier’s taprooms.

Southern Tier are also unveiling their new Strawberry Shortcake Imperial Ale, an 8.6% dessert-style ale that features flavors of fresh strawberries, sweet whipped cream and notes of flaky shortcake and biscuit balance. The beer is available in bottles wherever great craft beer is sold and on tap at Southern Tier Brewing’s taprooms right now.

Small business owners and brewery owners are one in the same, hence the need for, and the importance of, Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30, and Small Brewery Sunday, Dec. 1, a weekend that encourages support for local breweries, brewpubs, taprooms, and small businesses that contribute to local communities and economies during the holiday season and beyond.

And in a holiday shopping season dominated by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Shop Small Weekend shines a light on the importance of supporting smaller, independently owned businesses. By choosing to shop local, you’re making a positive impact that extends well beyond the transaction.

Why shop and support local? It’s simple. In short, money spent local, stays local. It creates jobs, pays wages and local taxes, all while supporting our community.

The idea of Small Brewery Sunday is to spotlight the contributions of craft breweries and small businesses to their communities and the economy while promoting their unique and high-quality beers. Many small breweries rely heavily on community support, and this day provides an opportunity for beer enthusiasts to show appreciation. By participating, you’re not only enjoying fresh, locally crafted beer but also contributing to the sustainability of small businesses in your community.

Small breweries contribute to local economies by creating jobs, sourcing local ingredients, and attracting tourism. Supporting them ensures that money stays within the community, fostering economic growth. And after challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, these small businesses need customer support to recover and thrive. This weekend highlights the importance of continued patronage.

According to the Brewer’s Association, craft brewer volume sales declined by 1% in 2023, raising small and independent brewers’ share of the U.S. beer market by volume to 13.3%. Despite the overall decline, small and independent brewers contributed $77.1 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023 and provided nearly 460,000 total jobs, with almost 190,000 jobs directly at breweries and brewpubs, including serving staff at brewpubs.

It has been another tough year for closures in Western New York. From Pressure Drop Brewing closing their taproom and brewing facilities after being purchased by Ellicottville Brewing to Marquee Brewing in Olean, BTR Brews in Angola, 12 Gates of EVL and 42 North Brewing Outpost in Ellicottville and Windy Brew Batavia closing, keeping your dollars local has never been more vitally important.

“Supporting your local brewery is important every day, however, Small Brewery Sunday is a great day to highlight the importance of those local breweries to every community in New York State,” Paul Leone, executive director of the New York State Brewers Association, said. “It’s been tough for [some of] those breweries, this year’s Small Brewery Sunday is more important than ever.”

The economic impact of small businesses cannot be overstated. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses create two out of every three new jobs in the United States. The bottom line is, your dollars help create jobs when you choose to shop local.

Shop Small Weekend, Small Business Saturday and Small Brewery Sunday offer a chance to slow down and savor the things that matter: conversation, friendships, community — and finely crafted concoctions of malt and hops.

Clarksburg Cider Closes Their Lancaster Taproom

After more than three years of slinging hard cider out of their Lancaster taproom, Clarksburg Cider has closed their doors. Clarksburg opened the space at 4493 Walden Avenue in Lancaster in August 2021. Owner and CEO Michael Robb released a statement citing “economic fluctuations and an unstable workforce” as some of the contributing factors for the closure. Despite their taproom space being closed, you will still be able to find Clarksburg Cider on draft and in bottles and cans at select retailers around Western New York. And after Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the Direct-to-Consumer Shipment Bill for Cider and Spirits into law, which takes effect next month, Clarksburg’s cider will also be available for purchase and direct shipping online.

Windy Brew’s Batavia taproom, which opened in the Harvester Building in Aug, 2023, will close their doors on Oct. 13. “While feedback and reviews from the community were strong from the start, it was a challenge to gain a foothold and draw in the volume of patronage that is necessary to sustain a business,” the brewery said on social media. “To the Batavia community, thank you for your support and kind words.” Now and until they close, the brewery will offer $5 pints and $10 (all 6% ABV beers and under) and $12 (all 6% ABV beers and over) crowler fills. Windy Brew’s main location in Strykersville will remain open as normal.

The New York State Distillers Guild is pleased to thank and applaud Governor Hochul, who has signed a bill that will allow its members to ship products to adult consumers (A3132-Lupardo/S2852-Skoufis). Under the new law, which takes effect in 90 days, New York State distillers will be authorized to ship direct to consumers (DTC) within the state, as well as to states where DTC shipping is authorized.

The new law extends a privilege that New York wineries have had for nearly 20 years, which has allowed them to successfully reach consumers and thrive.

NYS Distillers Guild President Brian Facquet said, “Governor Hochul’s signature on this landmark legislation changes the game for New York State’s distillers, who produce some of the highest quality spirits in the world. This new law will enable us to build our brands and compete in the global spirits industry. The Guild thanks Governor Hochul for her support of New York distillers and for giving us this essential route to bring our products to market. Governor Hochul’s signature builds on the terrific work of our lead legislative sponsors Assemblywoman Lupardo and Senator Skoufis over many years, as well as the work of the State Liquor Authority and other Executive Branch agencies that have been supportive. This new law creates the possibility of a bright future for our producers, and is great for consumers, the farmers who grow our core ingredients, and our hospitality and tourism allies.”

NYS Distillers Guild Executive Director Teresa Casey said, “Governor Hochul’s signature on this historic legislation changes the face of the Empire State’s craft beverage sector. The Guild thanks Governor Hochul for her vision in signing this crucial legislation that will enable our distillers to send their products to the consumers who want them. The Guild raises a glass in gratitude to Governor Hochul and our lead legislative sponsors, and all the public policymakers who have supported this common-sense extension of the farm-celebrating businesses facilitated by the Empire State’s farm beverage licenses.”

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said, “I have witnessed the remarkable growth of NY’s craft spirits and cider industry since we first established their licenses in 2007 and 2013. Allowing them to safely and securely ship direct is a way to grow NY’s small business sector, while satisfying growing consumer demand. If products are unavailable in local stores, the public has come to expect an on-line option, just like they have enjoyed with wine purchases. I’d like to thank the Governor and my legislative colleagues for recognizing how important this legislation is for the future of NY’s craft beverage industry and for the farmers who supply their ingredients.”

“This new law offers not just support, but a new pathway for growth to countless New York cideries and distilleries,” said Senator James Skoufis. “I fought hard for the passage of this bill – alongside Assemblywoman Lupardo and legislative partners – because I want New York’s craft beverage industry and all the intrepid farmers, producers, and small business owners to do more than survive in a post-pandemic landscape; I want them to thrive. I want to thank the New York State Distillers Guild and all of the advocates who worked tirelessly on behalf of this bill that will have a measurable and meaningful impact on craft beverage producers not just in my district, but all across New York State.”

State Liquor Chair Lily Fan says, “The team at the State Liquor Authority elatedly celebrates the signing of the Direct To Consumer shipping bill by Governor Kathy Hochul this past Sunday. We are proud to support the future economic growth of New York’s brilliant craft alcoholic beverage manufacturing industry while balancing public safety. We believe that this change will modernize the way small-size New York manufacturers can engage with their consumers, enormously improve their potential for brand recognition, and profit from a true following.”

Governor Kathy Hochul signed landmark legislation S.2852A/A.3132A that allows New York’s small craft manufacturers of spirits, cider, and mead to ship directly to consumers. The newly signed law opens significant opportunities for the state’s growing craft beverage industry by providing a vital market expansion tool—allowing these producers to ship their unique products directly to consumers within New York and across state lines.

“New York’s craft manufacturers create distinctive, world-class products that deserve a broader audience,” Governor Hochul said. “This legislation levels the playing field, allowing these small producers to reach new markets and foster economic growth across the state. With this new law, we are ensuring that New York remains a national leader in craft beverages, continuing to support our local businesses, tourism, and agriculture.”

Expanding Market Access for Craft Producers

New York’s craft cider and spirit producers often struggle to gain access to traditional wholesale distribution channels, placing these smaller manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage, as their products are less likely to reach licensed retailers and consumers. Direct-to-consumer shipping offers an essential new outlet for these smaller producers, enabling them to build brand loyalty by connecting directly with consumers who want to enjoy the unique products that define New York’s craft beverage industry. For consumers, the new law means greater access to high-quality New York-made products, driving demand for the state’s craft beverages both locally and nationally.

This expansion of market access is particularly significant as New York is home to the largest number of craft cideries in the nation and ranks second in the U.S. for the number of distilleries. By allowing these manufacturers to ship directly to consumers, New York strengthens its position as a leader in the craft beverage industry while supporting the state’s broader agricultural economy.

This legislation also represents a milestone for parity for New York’s spirits and cider producers, who have long advocated for the same privileges that wine manufacturers have enjoyed for nearly two decades, while providing safeguards against underage access to alcohol and ensuring proper tax collection by mirroring the responsible sales and delivery practices established under the DTC wine shipping laws.

Temporary COVID-19 Relief Now Permanent

During the COVID-19 pandemic, New York craft manufacturers of spirits and cider were granted temporary DTC shipping privileges to help them survive the economic downturn. This temporary measure proved highly successful, with no recorded violations, demonstrating that direct shipping can be done safely and responsibly. The new law permanently codifies this privilege, allowing small craft manufacturers to continue growing their businesses by reaching customers both within and outside of New York.

New York State Liquor Authority Chair Lily Fan said,“This legislation will hopefully support the long-term survival and create another growth spurt of New York’s vibrant craft and farm alcohol producers. I am immensely proud that our agency is able to support our manufacturing licensees in obtaining this long-sought change, which would allow them to directly touch their consumers and build brand loyalty in a meaningful manner. I am grateful for Governor Kathy Hochul and her team’s leadership on this issue. I truly embrace and celebrate the partnership with our bill sponsors and committee chairs: Senator Skoufis, Assemblymember Lupardo, and Assemblymember Stirpe. I look forward to continuing to bring efficiency to our industry and affordability to all consumers while ensuring public safety.”

State Senator James Skoufis said, “This new law offers not just support, but a new pathway for growth to countless New York cideries and distilleries. I fought hard for the passage of this bill – alongside advocates and my legislative partner—because I want New York’s craft beverage industry and all the intrepid farmers, producers, and small business owners to do more than survive in a post-pandemic landscape; I want them to thrive. I sincerely thank the Governor for signing this bill that will have a measurable and meaningful impact on craft beverage producers not just in my district, but all across New York State.”

State Senator Michelle Hinchey said, “Direct-to-consumer shipping is a lifeline for New York’s craft cideries and distilleries, and this new business opportunity means more customers, more sales, and a better chance for these small businesses to not only stay in the game but succeed. I’m thrilled this legislation has passed the finish line to support the New Yorkers who pour their hearts into making their businesses thrive. Sharing the incredible craft beverages of the Hudson Valley and New York with more areas through direct-to-consumer shipping is a huge win, and I thank the bill sponsors and Governor for making it happen and getting equity for these businesses.”

Assemblymember Donna Lupardo said, “On behalf of New York’s craft distilleries and cideries, a heartfelt thank you to Governor Hochul for signing our Direct-to-Consumer legislation into law. I’d also like to thank Sen. Skoufis and our legislative colleagues, who understood how important this is for the future of NY’s craft beverage industry, and to the farmers who supply their ingredients. NY produces some of the finest distilled spirits and cider in the country, long sought after by customers who could not find them on local liquor store shelves. I am especially thankful that the law will be in effect for this year’s holiday season, giving a significant economic boost to this struggling industry.”

Assemblymember Al Stirpe said, “I’m hopeful that this piece of legislation allows New York’s craft spirits, ciders and meads to be exposed to a national audience, allowing these manufacturers to grow to the next level. It is our desire that someday these craft beverages will take their place next to other well-known national and international brands on the shelves of liquor stores throughout our state and the world”.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “This legislation provides our distilleries and cideries with tremendous opportunity for growth that will have a ripple effect on our economy. With the most cideries and the second-most distilleries in the nation, New York State is committed to continuing to support these small businesses, who ultimately also help provide a boost to our farmers as well. By opening up the direct-to-consumer shipping option, producers can reach even more customers and consumers have an opportunity to discover a new, favorite New York beverage.”

New York State Distillers Guild Executive Director Teresa Casey said, “Governor Hochul’s signature on legislation authorizing distillers and cider makers to ship direct to consumers gives our New York craft beverage producers the opportunity to survive and thrive. This timely action builds on 20 years of forward-thinking public policy decisions in the Empire State that have helped our spirits, cider, wine, and beer become the nationally renowned products they are now. This is a win for our producers, the consumers who will now be able to safely enjoy quality craft spirits from all over the state, the farmers who provide our most important ingredients, and the hospitality and tourism businesses in all our communities. We also want to thank our lead legislative sponsors, Assemblywoman Lupardo and Senator Skoufis, for their extraordinary leadership in shepherding this bill through the Legislature with strong bipartisan support.”

New York Distiller’s Guild President Brian Facquet said, “The passage of Manufacturer Direct to Consumer shipping will empower our New York distillers to connect with the consumers who seek them out and tap into our fan base to grow outside of our geographic areas. Manufacturer DTC will fuel our growth, strengthen our New York State brands, and boost our agricultural manufacturing businesses. Thank you, Governor Hochul, for paving the way for a future of our New York State Distillers brimming with hope and optimism.”

New York Cider Association Executive Director Scott Ramsey said, “We are so thrilled and grateful for the leadership demonstrated by Governor Hochul in signing this Direct-to-Consumer Shipping Bill into law. With her signature, she has recognized the significant contribution our NY hard cider producers, growers, and farmers have been making for years to the agricultural and tourism economy of their communities and to this state. This legislation will help strengthen NY Cider’s capability to build this emerging category for all parties involved and respond to the consumer’s needs in a contemporary 2024 marketplace. By allowing our NY Cider growers, producers, and farmers the ability to directly connect with the customers and build their businesses in a safe and meaningful way, just as NY Wine has had for decades, this legislation will help to secure NY Cider’s leadership status in this industry while also fostering the growth of NY Cider’s economic impact and viability to our state’s agricultural landscape.”

Nine Pin Cider Owner Sonya Del Peral said, “We’ve worked long and hard to achieve this obvious modern-day option for consumer choice across New York State as well as to achieve needed parity among the craft beverage industry sectors. Our sincere gratitude to Governor Hochul for signing the bill in time for the upcoming holiday season which provides farm cideries the opportunity to begin offering exciting cider options not found on the shelves to New York cider fans. The establishment of this new channel of trade will position New York farm cideries to continue supporting the Empire State’s extraordinary orchards and farms – Drink NY Apples!”

New York Farm Bureau President David Fisher said, “We are excited for our farm distillers and farm cideries who will now be able to expand their market by shipping their products directly to consumers. This is a lifeline for many struggling distilleries and cideries throughout the state. This will help strengthen the fruit, grain and potato industry in New York and is a huge win for agriculture.”

This legislation further builds upon Governor Hochul’s efforts to modernize New York’s Alcoholic Beverage Control laws, including creating temporary permits to get new manufacturers open quickly, adding spirits, in addition to beer and wine at one day special events, expanding outdoor dining, and extending drinks-to-go.

The new law takes effect in 90 days, just in time for the upcoming holiday season, allowing consumers to explore and enjoy New York’s world-class craft spirits, cider and mead from the comfort of their own homes.

It will take place on a 1/4 mile course surrounding Bottle Rocket. Space is limited and participation costs $28.13 (tax and fees included). There are three heats – 10am, 10:35am and 11:10am.
Clarence’s Shalooby Loofer is celebrating their first anniversary on Aug. 24. The party starts at noon and will feature live music from Eric Weinholtz (3:30pm) and Cameron Markott (6:30pm), food and beer, including the release of Rasputin’s Remedy, a raspberry cheesecake stout, and Elixer Mixer Strong Ale, a beer that will be used as a base in cocktails. The brewery also recently released Tom’s Riddle, a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout named in honor of Sergeant Thomas A. “Tom” Petchke Jr., who died fighting a fire this past November. Proceeds from the beer, aged in a barrel donated by Petchke Jr., will be donated to the Ballardsville, K.Y. and Clarence, N.Y. fire departments.

Gene McCarthy’s /OFW Brewing Introduces Lucky 7 Pricing

If an effort to combat rising costs, Gene McCarthy’s has introduced new Lucky 7 beer pricing, which means all pints, regardless of style, will cost $7. “Tired of paying $8-10 for a 10 ounce goblet of beer? It’s time to say good-bye to inflation and enjoy [our] Lucky 7 beer promise,” a social media post reads. “That’s a full pour of a great house-brewed beer, complete with a beautiful pillowy head for only $7 (plus state tax of course). Visit us and enjoy our inflation-be-damned brews. You savor the beer and let us worry about the price of malt and hops.”

Gov. Hochul Signs Direct-to-Consumer Legislation Into Law

Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed into law the Direct-to-Consumer Shipment Bill for cider and spirits, which will allow for New York’s cider growers, producers and farmers, as well as manufacturers of N.Y. craft spirits and mead, to ship directly to their customers in New York and other states that allow shipment. The ability to direct ship was made available during the pandemic, but that allowance was rescinded when the Executive Orders ended. This new direct-to-consumer legislation will take effect in 90 days just in time for the upcoming holiday season.
