Buffalo Bills-Themed Beers Continue to Hit Shelves

Just in time for the start of the Buffalo Bills’ preseason, several Bills-themed beers have returned to brewery and store shelves across Western New York. Ellicottville Brewing’s Buffalo Fan Zone IPA, an American IPA with notes of apricot, lemon rind and hops, is back for another season, Griffon Brewing’s Buffalo Proud, a 4.2% traditional American Lite Lager with Saaz hops, is available now wherever Griffon beers are sold and New York Beer Project’s Buffalo Billzner is a 4,6% Buffalo-style Pilsner, a cross between a German-style Pilsner and Italian-style Pilsner, that’s bright and crisp with floral and citrus hop character. It’s available on draft and in cans at NYBP locations. Resurgence Brewing’s BUF IPA, a hazy IPA brewed with Citra and Cashmere, has also made a return in cans and on draft.

Bee Spit Meadery, First Line Brewing Team On New Collab

Holland’s Bee Spit Meadery and Orchard Park’s First Line Brewery have teamed up on a new collab, Born To Bee Wild Orange Creamsicle & Custard Braggot. A braggot is an ancient hybrid alcoholic drink made by combining honey and malted grains and Born To Bee Wild blends orange citrus, vanilla custard, malt, and Bee Spit’s signature honey. “Remember racing outside when you heard the ice cream truck coming down the street? Before you even reached the curb, you already knew what you were ordering. That first bite of an Orange Creamsicle. Bright citrus. Creamy vanilla. Pure summer. We asked ourselves one question…What if that feeling could be poured into a glass?” Bee Spit said. Born To Bee Wild is available on draft and in 16oz. cans at both Bee Spit and First Line.

Picture it – it’s the dead of summer, you’re outside enjoying the weather, and the sun is beating down upon you. When you need to rehydrate, what are you reaching for? Most likely an ice-cold lager. Chances are, your fridge, your cooler, are full of them. Bonfires, summer get-togethers, pool parties, yard work – it’s just common knowledge that lagers are the most refreshing summertime brew. Why is that?

While we are conditioned to associate lagers with the summer season, the answer is both psychological and physiological. Lagers are light-bodied, highly carbonated, and clean, which makes them especially refreshing when you’re hot and sweaty. When your body’s craving hydration and relief, a crisp lager satisfies both your thirst and your taste.

Research says that the cool temperature of ice-cold lagers triggers thermoreceptors in your mouth and throat, thus giving you a cooling sensation. As your sense of taste and smell dull slightly due to dehydration and heat fatigue on hot days, lagers are easier to process. They are also typically highly carbonated, which contributes to a perception of refreshment due to the carbonic acid stimulating your trigeminal nerve. Lagers rely less on aroma complexity and more on texture, carbonation, crispness, and finish, attributes that remain highly perceptible even when olfactory sensitivity declines during the summer. Because trigeminal sensation remains robust during heat stress, carbonation continues to provide a vivid sensory experience even when aroma perception is reduced.

After reading way too much medical research online to support my theory, something I never thought I’d be doing when I started writing about craft beer, I wanted to gather some real-world thoughts on why lagers taste better during summer, so I turned to the experts. And by experts, I mean the people behind my current favorite local lagers – Smoldered Society (Strike Anywhere), Resurgence Brewing (Bridge Pilsner), Buffalo Olde Brewery (Lovejoy Lager), Buffalo Brewing (Simon Pure), First Line Brewing (Everyday Lager) and 42 North Brewing (Solshine).

Illumination Pilsner was one of the very first beers I drank when 42 North Brewing opened, and while no offense is meant towards it or their Craftsman Lager, my current favorite crispy from the East Aurora brewery is Solshine, a helles lager brewed with sweet orange peel and tangerine, one of my absolute favorite beers to consume while floating around in the pool.

“I tend to think lagers taste great all year round,” 42 North owner John Cimperman said. “That said, I do tend to drink more of them in the summer. And the beauty of a lager coming in around 5% is, you can toss back a few. Crisp, refreshing and a perfect way to beat the heat. Before, of course, you throw back a few IPA’s.”

I’ve long posited that Buffalo Olde’s Lovejoy Lager is one of the most slept-on lagers in all of Western New York. It’s also one of my favorite beers to drink at a beer festival because, not only is it thoroughly refreshing, it’s a well-built beer. When I asked Buffalo Olde head brewer Tom Dargen for his thoughts on my lager theory, he offered something of an interesting take.

“I did recently hear an NPR story about how to manage extreme heat where the expert interviewed said drinking light beer was as hydrating as water, and by that he meant lighter lager, which I assume you are referring to as well,” Dargen said. “I love that clean, crisp, beer-flavored beer is having a bit of a renaissance. Who wants to drink another enormous IPA that tastes like bong water on a hot summer day?”

Resurgence Brewing’s owner Jeff Ware has a bit more of a straightforward take.

“Nothing better than a cold refreshing beer on a hot day. Match made in heaven. Like a beer and hot dog at a baseball game!” Ware said.

Russ Haentges, head brewer at Orchard Park’s First Line Brewing, said that it is lager’s simple nature that makes them a go-to choice for summer when you’re reaching into your cooler.

“I suppose I should start by asking you: in which season does a lager not taste delicious?” he said. “Because lagers are straightforward nearly 99% of the time, they are especially attractive during the summer. The light, refreshing, crisp, and simple nature of the style makes it a natural go-to in the heat. I also feel we are finally turning a corner, with lagers becoming the preferred choice as the hazy IPA craze begins to settle.”

Buffalo Brewing Company is making some of the best lagers in Western New York right now, and it is largely due to their successful revival of the Simon Pure line and Schreiber Brewing’s Manru line. As owner and head brewer John Domres told me recently, BBC makes “old man beers,” and they are doing it pretty damn well in my opinion. While he says part of the reason why lagers are so closely associated with summer is psychological, there is science behind it, which I found out during my research for this article. The science does actually exist.

“Lagers simply taste different during the summer,” he said. “They are cold, crisp, clean, refreshing, and usually not too heavy. When the weather is hot, you don’t want something overly sweet, boozy, or filling. Instead, you prefer something cold with good carbonation and a clean finish. Part of the reason for this preference is likely psychological. Cookouts, patios, baseball games, yard work, and ice-cold cans all evoke a sense of lager season. In essence, lager embodies the essence of summer in a glass.”

According to Smoldered Society’s Cameron Frank, lagers are built for summer because they can be full-flavored, but not overly heavy. Plus, they are pretty much untouchable when it comes to day drinking.

“Summer offers a special opportunity for these beers to fucking rip. Built for longer sessions, the (traditionally) lower-ABV, crisp, refreshing characteristics of lager complement the warmer months all too well,” Frank says. “Lagers offer the craft beer drinker an opportunity to enjoy something full-flavored, without the filling nature of hop-saturated and/or high-gravity beer. In addition, you can drink 4 or 5 pints without getting annihilated.”

In conclusion, hot weather changes human sensory perception. Lagers are uniquely engineered, through high attenuation, elevated carbonation, clean fermentation, moderate alcohol, and cold service, to match the physiological state of someone experiencing heat stress. While lagers are psychologically associated with summer, they are biologically optimized to feel more refreshing.

So, why do lagers taste better during the summer? It’s just science.

It’s the kind of beer that shows up, fits in, and keeps good company.” The Charge is available at all EBC taprooms and wherever great craft beer is sold.

Armstrong’s Beer Co. Eyes Taproom in West Seneca

Armstrong’s Beer Co., a new venture from Alexander Armstrong, whose family owns and operates Armstrong’s Barber Shop and Armstrong’s Armory, has filed plans with the Town of West Seneca to open a new taproom at the former Country Peddler’s building (1340 Orchard Park Road), Buffalo Business First reports. Tentative plans call for a taproom space that serves a rotating beer and wine selection plus a limited food menu of burgers, fries and light snacks. According to Armstrong, Armstrong’s Beer plans to operate a “family-friendly” site open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with outdoor seating, weather-permitting.

The building also features Molly’s Mutts Doggie Daycare and El Jefe Mexican Bar and Grill.

One of the most unique beer events in the history of Buffalo craft beer, not to mention one of my all-time personal favorites, TreBrewChet – A Brewery Trebuchet Competition, took place nearly seven years ago as the crow flies (Sept. 28, 2019 to be exact). Hosted by Community Beer Works at the Outer Harbor, the event featured eight local breweries and eight trebuchet devices launching pumpkins on the Buffalo waterfront. It was a celebration of community, local craft, and pure ingenuity that has yet to be duplicated. And I’d love to see that change.

What’s a trebuchet? It’s a gravity-powered catapult designed to hurl heavy objects over long distances, mostly in the olden days to lay siege during war. The heavy objects in this case? Flaming projectiles? No. Diseased animal carcasses? No. Pumpkins.

If this sounds weird, it is. What can I say – the world was a different place pre-COVID. This beer scene of ours sure was. And that’s what made this event great. It’s why I’m thinking about it nearly seven years on.

TreBrewChet participants included Community Beer Works, 12 Gates Brewing (RIP), Hamburg Brewing, West Shore Brewing (RIP), Windy Brew, Swiftwater Brewing, Lilly Belle Meads, and 1886 Malt House. They each designed and built trebuchets to compete in distance and accuracy competitions and even launched pumpkins at a giant cutout of Tom Brady’s face. That, in and of itself, makes TreBrewChet a memorable happening.

I asked Ethan Cox, formerly of CBW and a TreBrewChet co-organizer, what his favorite memory of the event was. With nearly no hesitation, he told me he remembers vividly Swiftwater owner Andy Cook showing up with a device that spewed fire. And despite Cox’s urging to the contrary, Cook deployed his device.

Not only was there punkin’ chunkin’, but there was something for the entire family down on Buffalo’s waterfront. Besides great local craft beer, there were miniature trebuchet demos, pumpkin carving, balloons, face painting, food trucks, bounce houses, and more. And, from what I can remember, it was a pretty picture-perfect fall day in Buffalo. The waterfront also provided a sensational backdrop for the festivities.

So my question is – why hasn’t there been another TreBrewChet? I would love to see this event make a triumphant return after nearly a decade. Why can’t we do this again? Despite recent taproom and bottle shop closures, our beer scene is as robust as ever. I don’t think we’d have any trouble getting breweries, cideries or meaderies to take part. There are nearly 70 across Western New York. And, not for nothing, but Western New York Beer Week is coming up. This could be a perfect fit. We could get food trucks, vendors, live music, and, of course, local craft beer. It also helps fall is the best season for beer here in Buffalo – a hill I’m willing to die on – so I have no doubt the beer list would be great. Festbiers, marzens, Oktoberfestbiers, pumpkin ales, brown ales, wet-hopped IPAs, bocks – there could be a really fun tap list if TreBrewChet were to ever return.

Like “Field of Dreams,” if they build it, I believe Western New Yorkers would come. I know I would. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. But hey, maybe I’m just screaming into the void here and maybe these words will ultimately go nowhere, but it doesn’t hurt to try, right? If nothing else, it’s fun to reminisce. Craft beer is supposed to be fun and another TreBrewChet would be just that.

After five years in business, Elmwood beer bar The Beer Keep has announced plans to close on July 28 with a final party planned for July 25.

I’ve had a lot of beers at The Keep over the years (and probably too many hot dogs), but we will always remember our first – Community Beer Works Good Neighbor IPA – sitting at the bar with my buddy Cory Muscasto before they opened. They didn’t even have the beer taps installed yet. We got our pints from Breezy Burrito Bar (who are also closing this month). And it’s been a good run ever since.

“What started as a little neighborhood craft beer bar became so much more for us: “The Keep” has been a place to celebrate, bring your dog for a patio visit, grab a glizzy and an ice-cold lager, laugh at one too many ridiculous videos, and catch up with old friends while making new ones. We’re so lucky to have been a beat in the rhythm of the Elmwood Village – it’s an experience that we’ll always carry with us,” The Beer Keep said. “Thank you to the Elmwood Village for five unforgettable years. It’s been an absolute honor to be your neighborhood beer bar.”

More details on the “final rager” will be released soon.

“It’s business as usual through Tuesday, July 28, with one final rager going down on Saturday, July 25 (details coming soon). These next few weeks aren’t about saying goodbye—they’re about celebrating the past five years,” The Beer Said said. “So come raise one last pint with us. Order one more hot dog. Tell us your favorite Beer Keep memories—even if it’s a struggle to piece them together. And always remember: Beer sucks.”

As Florida Georgia Line once said, “Here’s to the good times, while there’s still time.” Long live The Keep.

Shalooby Loofer Brewing is set to become Local Hollow Brewery. Owner Eon Verrall has made the decision to sell the brewery after they celebrate their third anniversary in August, in order to focus more on family and other professional obligations.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share that Shalooby Loofer will celebrate its third—and final—anniversary on August 8, 2026. After a great deal of reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to sell the brewery so I can focus more on my family and other professional obligations,” Verrall said in a post on social media.

Local Hollow will be led by Hilary Dollinger. Moving forward, though the brewery is changing hands and rebranding under a different name, Verrall says that customers can expect the “same great beer from the same great brewer.” The brewery and taproom is located in a converted 3-car garage equipped with a Ruby Pro 1 BBL Electric Brew House.

“The good news is that the brewery’s next chapter is in great hands,” Verrall said. “The new owners are local, passionate, and committed to continuing what we’ve built together. Later this summer or early fall, Shalooby Loofer will become Local Hollow Brewing, led by Hilary Dollinger. You can expect the same great beer brewed by the same talented brewer and served by the familiar bartenders you’ve come to know and appreciate.”

Over the course of these past three years, Shalooby Loofer has championed the mantra of “craft beer for a good cause.” The brewery has donated a portion of their proceeds to charity with $1 of each pint sold in the tasting room going to benefit buildOn, which will help to support building a school in Nepal. A goal that Verrall says they achieved.

“The past three years have been an incredible journey, and I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your support. Together, we truly lived our motto, “Drink it Forward.” Thanks to your generosity, we achieved our goal of helping build a school in Nepal and supported numerous local charities, making a meaningful impact both around the world and here in our own community,” Verrall said.

And if you’re reading this, which I hope you are, you’re more than likely wondering about the genesis of the brewery name? That comes from the nicknames of owner/brewer Eon Verrall’s daughters, Madison (Shalooby) and Maggie (Loofer). Verrall says that he initially was looking to open something on a much, much smaller scale, but decided to ‘go big or go home.’

“What started as a simple three-car garage became something far greater—a magical gathering place filled with friendship, laughter, and unforgettable memories. That is because of you. I couldn’t be more grateful, and I’m confident that this special place will continue to thrive under Hilary’s leadership,” Verrall said.

Shalooby Loofer will celebrate its third anniversary and will say goodbye on August 8.

From toasting pints at the taproom in Clarence Hollow to drinking their beer at countless events (my podcast partner Scott Panfil was part of Team Shalooby Loofer for CollaBEERation a few years back), thanks for the memories Shalooby Loofer. Eon, we’ll see you on down the road – thanks for the beer these past three years. We wish you nothing but the best.
