World of Beer, 12 Gates Brewing Team on Special Anniversary Beer

As World of Beer prepares to celebrate their fourth anniversary on August 24, the Walden Galleria-based gastropub have called upon the help of 12 Gates Brewing for a special anniversary beer, 12 Gates / World of Beer Berry Blast, a light and tart fruited Berliner Weisse brewed with blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry puree that clocks in at 5% ABV. WOB will be celebrating their anniversary all month long, as the anniversary beer is on tap now.

“Even with all that fruit, it still has a great tartness and is very sessionable,” new 12 Gates Head Brewer Matt Gordon says. “I’m expecting this beer to be a fan favorite while it lasts.” He adds that the WOB team was very involved throughout the process. “The WOB team stopped by 12 Gates to finalize the flavors and amount of puree they felt everyone would enjoy. As much fun as it sounds, tastings are very hard work. We all had to sample the beer with ‘X’ amount of puree in it, then try another variation with a different amount of puree and compare. Drinking beer and being critical was a job that morning and we all made sure to do it with a smile.”

When the decision was made to brew an anniversary beer, 12 Gates was World of Beer’s first and only choice for a brewery, says Product Manager Sean Wieder, because of the existing relationship between the two establishments.

“We had always talked about the possibility to partner with a local brewery to collaborate on a beer,” Wieder says. “We knew our four year anniversary was approaching and wanted to do something cool, new, unique, and special for our loyalty members. 12 Gates has always been good to us and we try to help them out any chance we can because they would easily do the same if we ever needed anything. I also knew that 12 Gates has brewed beers for others before, such as MyCity Brew (Byson Brown Dunkel) and 103.3 The Edge (Barbaric Blonde). So, when the bosses finally gave me the go ahead to start looking into local breweries who would collaborate with us, 12 Gates was my first choice.”

He adds that WOB and 12 Gates have already discussed future anniversary beers, depending on how well the customers respond to Berry Blast. “We wanted to do something special and different. To give people the opportunity to be a part of a beer is something special that most servers and bartenders don’t get to be a part of, and it’s always best to reward those that help you to be successful. We saw that another World of Beer [location] did a collaboration on cask and we wanted to take that one-step further. We wanted to be part of something that we can halfway call our own.”

Wieder explains that a fruited sour was the right choice for the anniversary beer because not only is it one of the better selling styles at World of Beer, the entire staff agreed they did not want to make anything heavy and the fruited sour style is one of 12 Gates’ fortes.

“12 Gates has been putting out fruited sours left and right recently and they are all top notch. If you haven’t had an opportunity to try any of them I highly recommend you do. We have had just about every one of their sours on tap, whether it be Passionfruit, Key Lime, Blueberry, etc.; they all were all gone within days. So I believe a big reason we picked that was because it’s a style I knew 12 Gates is very successful at making.”

Looking back at his experience and time with World of Beer, Wieder says, “I would say that out of everything that we have built in the last four years, the thing we are most proud of is the relationships we have built. Although World of Beer itself is a corporation, if you ask any one of our loyalty customers or any beer reps we deal with, we don’t give you any bit of a corporate feel. We strive ourselves in being local and helping out local businesses and members of the Buffalo community. We have events with local breweries all the time, we have charity events for Pixie Mamas Animal Rescue Shelter twice a month, and we do everything we can to build of local relationships on a daily basis.”

“It’s hard to pin point any specifics because there is just so much that we do,” he continues. “Every week we have trivia and we have a brewery sponsor it. One thing I am very excited about is I started a “Brewery Trivia War,” once a month where two breweries will compete against each other during trivia for a chance at a permanent draft line the following month. In addition to this they also give out swag, pour samples, and every customer votes on which brewery they think will do better. Then a pair of random customers who guessed the winning team correctly will receive a $25 gift card. It’s just something fun and different for both the customers and the brewery reps.”

As expected, as World of Beer regularly has approximately 500 beers available in bottles, cans and on draft at any given time, it was a difficult process for Wieder to nail down his favorite beers over the last four years. He points to the growth of the Western New York beer scene as a reason he can’t. “I am really impressed with how much the local beer market has advanced in the city of Buffalo throughout the four years we have been open. These local breweries and beers can go head to head with any other city and give them a run for their money.”

Buffalo Brewing, Buffalo History Museum Announce New Partnership

Buffalo Brewing Company will be the exclusive beer sponsor of the Buffalo History Museum, launching on August 16 when The Sheila Divine performs at Party for the Portico.

This partnership includes the debut of a signature beer, 1862 Cream Ale. Named after the year the Buffalo History Museum was founded, 1862 is a cream ale that will be available exclusively at museum events and Buffalo Brewing Company’s tasting room and beer garden. A percentage of beer sales will be donated to the museum.

1862 Cream Ale is brewed with Simcoe and Citra hops with Pilsner and Vienna malt for light, drinkable notes of citrus. The beer is on tap now at Buffalo Brewing.

The Dude Hates Cancer, Resurgence Present Homebrew for a Good Cause

The Dude Hates Cancer and Resurgence Brewing are once again teaming up to present the 6th Annual The Dude’s Charity Homebrew Competition on August 10 (12pm) at Resurgence’s Niagara Street location. 42 North Rolls Out Special Borderland Festival IPA Cans

In honor of the second annual Borderland Music and Arts Festival next month, 42 North Brewing has again released a special edition can of their flagship Borderland IPA. The limited edition 16oz. can integrates the festival’s branding and features the entire festival lineup. Cans will see limited distribution throughout Western New York. The commemorative Borderland IPA cans can be found at Buffalo area Wegmans, Tops, Consumer’s Beverage, and local craft beer stores, as well as AJ’s Beer Warehouse in Rochester. Flying Bison, Buffalo Distilling Team Up for Booze and Brews Music Festival

Flying Bison Brewing and neighbor Buffalo Distilling are joining forces for the second annual Booze and Brews Music Festival, a full day of music, food and drink spanning both locations, on August 10 (1pm). There is music until sunset on the outdoor stage in Flying Bison’s Beer Garden and then inside at Buffalo Distilling until the day ends. $10 gets food/drink specials at both locations and performances from The Someday Maybe Band, The Steam Donkeys, A Band Named Sue, 10 Cent Howl and Randle and the Late Night Scandals (Outdoor Stage, 2-9pm) and the Denzell Ward Band (Indoor Stage, 9:30pm).

Resurgence Brewing Launches Pop Up Beer Gardens in Olmsted Parks

Resurgence Brewing Company will launch the first of their roving beer gardens this weekend, August 2 and 3, at Delaware Park. It is the pilot for their ‘Pints in the Park’ Pop Up Beer Garden collaboration with Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy. Resurgence plans to set up mobile beer gardens in different parks throughout Western New York with a portion of the proceeds going back to the park.

“We have some wonderful parks here in Buffalo, and this is just another great way to get out and enjoy them,” Resurgence Owner Jeff Ware said. “There are a lot of awesome spots we can eventually get to, great spots that are totally underutilized.”

Pints in the Park will feature several draft beer offerings, yard games, music and food (TBD). All are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, lawn chairs, and their own food.

Thin Man Brings Buffalo Beer to the World’s Stage

Thin Man Brewery are doing their part to make Buffalo beer a global entity by proudly carrying the sigil for our beer scene onto the world’s stage at the recent ArtBeerFest in Caminha, Portugal, where they were only one of six North American breweries invited to pour. But that wasn’t all that was on their overseas agenda as the brewery also took part in a once-in-a-lifetime collaborative brew at Colossus Brewing in Porto, Portugal alongside Barrier Brewing Company from Long Island, Seven Island Brewery of Corfu, Greece and MØMBrewers of Portugal, a Double IPA with Centennial and Citra hops, pineapple, passionfruit, toasted coconut & vanilla.

And in case you were wondering, Thin Man poured Burning Money IPA, Minkey Boodle, Activate the Juices and Bliss DIPA at ArtBeerFest.

Thin Man, who have also poured at the Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen in Denmark in both 2018 and 2019, landed on the beer list at ArtBeerFest thanks to Brand Ambassador Mike Shatzel’s friend Kostas Pougatsias, Seven Island Brewery owner, who introduced him to festival promoter Octavio Costa.

“My friend Kostas from Seven Island came to New York City to do some collaborations and I made an intro to Barrier Brewing in Long Island,” Shatzel says. “I made the trek to NYC for the collab and we had a great time hitting Brooklyn up. A few days later, he made the introduction to Octavio. After seeing a few videos of the festival, we quickly agreed to attend.”

ArtBeerFest has sparked something of a culture shift in Portugal’s beer scene, with Costa stating that the fest has led to the opening of a number of breweries across the country. The annual event features beer samplings, brewer shows, curated tastings, vendors, workshops, master classes and labs from around the world.

“ArtBeerFest,” Pougatsias says, “it’s a movement and a state of mind that gets together people from around the world to celebrate beer culture and friendship at one of the most beautiful corners of Portugal!”

“ArtBeerFest,” Costa adds, “since the beginning, has been focused on the idea of broadening the knowledge base and consumer experience in our market. We never had a beer culture in Portugal until [about] 2012 or 2013. The festival was actually a mark in the short history of beer in my country and from that time, we saw dozens of projects multiplying. I can say that 80% of the breweries were born after the experience in Caminha. ArtBeerFest offers something for each drinker, something new for a beer geek and, the most important thing; it has been doing the job for the breweries and consumers at the same time.”

Costa says that he knew he had to have Thin Man at ArtBeerFest this year after a chance encounter with a few cans of Minkey Boodle.

“We are lucky to belong to an awesome global beer network,” he says. “Joining people around the world to have intense days of friendship, community and fun. The handsome mates at Greek brewery Seven Island, who we invited last year, introduced Thin Man to me. It’s a chain reaction. We believe in friendship. If our common friends made those introductions, it’s done. Last February I was traveling for some collab brew days in Chicago and New York, and by coincidence I had some cans of Minkey Boodle with a mate during my last day in NY. Finally there, I knew we just made the right choice once again by listening to a friend’s advice on them.”

“We do all this, each in his own way, for the love of beer and the craft beer community!” Pougatsias adds. “Traveling and meeting new people in some amazing festivals around the world, it’s all about making your family bigger and your experiences more enjoyable while you spread the idea and culture of beer craft. I consider both Octavio and Mike my fellow warriors, fighting side-by-side as crusaders against the evil spirit of cheaper, no-good industrial beer in a global effort as we try to make a better future for the next generations. I am so glad to be part of this big family and I wouldn’t be if I didn’t meet guys like Octavio & Mike. That’s changed my life completely!”

Thin Man’s inclusion at ArtBeerFest 2019 could lead to more invitations being sent to American breweries in the years to come, because, as Costa puts it, the European beer scene is attracted by American beer.

“I do think that more US breweries will take part in the festival,” Costa says, “I’m really sure of that. Europe is a business destination. The festival is a great door to knock on, not just for the Portuguese market, but the European one as well. Apart of that, our strategy aims to be visible as a great festival in the US. We’re attracted by US beers. We’re more open to tasting and to new experiences. US beers have that hype for us. We see it as an argument to help grow and upgrade the beer culture in Europe.”

Shatzel adds that Thin Man’s appearance at events like ArtBeerFest in Portugal and MBCC in Denmark introduces Buffalo beer to consumers and to markets that would otherwise have no way of having access to it.

“I think Thin Man being at such respected festivals such as ArtBeerFest and at MBCC for Copenhagen Beer Week for the last two years gets Buffalo’s name out to such a wide audience that’s difficult to achieve through traditional methods,” Shatzel adds. “It establishes a name to the Buffalo beer scene to places where they would never have made an association otherwise.”

Thin Man spreading the good word of Buffalo beer to the global masses is far from over as the brewery has also been invited to pour at 8×8 Brewing Project Festival in Beijing, China in October and another festival in Poland at the end of November. Stay tuned for more information on those.

Buffalo Beer Buzz: Buffalo Brewing’s Third Anniversary, 25th Annual Flour City Brew Fest, Road to Borderland Series, National IPA Day at NYBP

Buffalo Brewing Celebrates Their Third Anniversary

Believe it or not, but Buffalo Brewing Company are already turning three years old. They made it through the not so terrible two’s and it’s time to celebrate this weekend, August 3 (1pm).  The party will feature over 10 beers on tap, including a few special releases and casks, a special brewery food menu from Loose Cannon Food Truck, live music from Josh Geercken (4-7pm), raffles for limited edition brewery merch and beer, and on top of all of that, free cake! Crowler and growler fills will be available, as will cans of 1932 Galaxy Oat Cream IPA to go.

Buffalo Breweries Invade Rochester’s Flour City Brewfest

A number of Buffalo-area breweries are set to invade the 25th annual Flour City Brewers Fest in Rochester on August 16 (6pm), including 42 North, Big Ditch, Community Beer Works, Hamburg Brewing, New York Beer Project, Pressure Drop, Resurgence Brewing, Rusty Nickel and Thin Man. The festival will feature over 80 breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries. There will also be food, live music, custom-built lounge areas, a 25th anniversary beer from Rohrbach Brewing and more. General admission ($45) tickets are available at www.flourcitybrewersfest.com and include access to sampling, 6oz. glass and a $5 food voucher good for any food vendor.

Road to Borderland Event Series Coming to Local Breweries

In advance of the second annual Borderland Music and Arts Festival, a two-day festival featuring over 20 bands on September 21 and 22, the Road to Borderland Summer Event Series will feature live music, local artisans and the chance to purchase no-service-fee tickets. The special preview will take place August 1 (Blackbird Cider Works), August 8 (Community Beer Works), August 10 (West Falls Center for the Arts), August 10 (Flying Bison), August 14 (Resurgence), August 16 (Collective Arts), August 17 (12 Gates), August 22 (Lockhouse Distillery), August 23 (Buffalo Distilling) and September 5 (Rohrbach Brewing). Celebrate National IPA Day at New York Beer Project

Hopheads unite! August 1 is National IPA Day and you can celebrate with New York Beer Project (5pm). In honor of the very special day, NYBP are rolling out their hoppiest offerings, including The One v.7 New England IPA, Destination IPA, Righteous Dude Double IPA and Hawaiian Destination (hibiscus flowers, fresh ginger, and mango puree). The event will also mark the debut of Pineapple Milkshake IPA, their newest milkshake IPA brewed with pineapple puree, lactose, vanilla, Centennial, Cascade, Falconer’s Flight, Citra, Topaz and Idaho Gem hops. The beer was brewed at NYBP’s Victor location by their Head Brewer Ben Elford.

New Bottle Shop Coming To North Tonawanda

This September, Buffalo Wings & Brewhouse will opens its doors at 653 Oliver Street, inside the former Bestaste Mini Market. The bottle shop will feature packaged beer for sale to enjoy on-site or take home, as well as 16 taps with a mostly local-leaning tap list planned. There will also be dedicated lines for coffee and kombucha. Wine options will also be available. Buffalo Wings & Brewhouse will also offer food, including wings, in addition to vegetarian and vegan options as well. Matt Bille, who purchased the building after it was foreclosed by the city, owns Buffalo Wings & Brewhouse.

West Shore Brewing Hits the Beach for Second Anniversary

West Shore Brewing will hold their second annual West Fest, a celebration of their second anniversary, July 27 (2pm). West Fest 2.0: Beach Party will feature live music, food trucks and special beer releases (Strawberry Banana Imperial Hefeweizen, Pina Colada Sour, Orange Pineapple Green Flyer New England IPA, Coconut London Brown Ale). Though actual Christmas is still months away (thankfully), you can celebrate right now at Christmas in July (July 25, 6pm) at New York Beer Project, and what better way to celebrate than with a skydiving Santa, who will literally jump out of a plane and parachute down to the brewery. In honor of the special occasion, NYBP are releasing a special Gin Barrel Aged White Christmas, a Belgian Blond brewed with peppermint and spearmint leaves, aged on cacao nibs, then aged for seven months in Black Button Distilling bourbon barrels that last held gin. Thin Man Teams with Prairie Artisan Ales on Barrel Aged Imperial Stout Trio

Thin Man Brewery recently travelled to Oklahoma to spend some time with Prairie Artisan Ales and collaborate on a trio of heavy-hitting 13% Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts, and now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of those labors (July 27, 11am). 42 North Unveils 2019 Limited Edition Borderland Festival IPA Can

42 North Brewing Company has launched a limited edition can for the 2019 Borderland Music & Arts Festival™. The commemorative can of the brewery’s flagship, Borderland IPA, will replicate the music festival poster art and feature the 2019 line-up on the 16 ounce can.

The Borderland Festival, scheduled for September 21st and 22nd at Knox Farm State Park, just 16 miles south of Buffalo, celebrates the rich artisan history and renaissance of the Buffalo Niagara region. The 2019 Festival will feature over 20 bands on three stages, including Gov’t Mule, led by former Allman Brothers guitarist, Warren Haynes, and progressive bluegrass band, Greensky Bluegrass headline the second-year festival. The diverse line-up includes Rock Hall and Blues Hall of Fame legend, Mavis Staples, Austin-based, Americana artist, Shakey Graves, and American folk band, The Wood Brothers. The Grammy winning bluegrass band, The Infamous Stringdusters, will also make their Borderland debut.

In addition to the diverse music line-up, the Borderland Festival will also feature a 100% craft beer line-up. This year’s brewery line-up includes 12 Gates Brewing Company, 42 North Brewing Company, Community Beer Works, Blackbird Cider Works, Flying Bison Brewery, Resurgence Brewing, Rohrbach Brewing Company and, representing north of the border, Collective Arts.

Festival Co-Founder, John Cimperman states, “We are proud to feature some of the best beers of the region and highlight the growing craft beer community in Buffalo and Southern Ontario. The Borderland Festival is a great opportunity for fans to expand their boundaries when it comes to both music and beer.”

The Borderland Festival will feature the Buffalocal™ Craft Beer Corral with over 20 beers on tap from the region’s breweries. Additionally, the breweries will collaborate to brew a beer on the festival grounds and offer sampling during the festival from 12 noon until 3 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

The commemorative Borderland IPA will hit store shelves the week of July 21st at Buffalo area Wegman’s, Tops, Consumer’s Beverage, and local craft beer stores, as well as AJ’s Beer Warehouse in Rochester.

The Power of Music & Beer: Ellicottville Brewing, Rock Autism Brew Up Fight Against Autism

Chances are you’ve heard the numbers, and they are truly staggering: autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today. Count Ellicottville Brewing among those who have seen those studies, and they are joining the fight against autism by doing what they do best – brewing beer. The Ellicottville brewery has partnered with local nonprofit Rock Autism, who are striving to raise awareness & acceptance for autism in Western New York by building music and film workshops for youth on the autism spectrum, on Sonnyboi EBC, a New England IPA. Proceeds from sales of the beer will go to benefit Rock Autism, whose objective is for individuals to carve out a career path, spark entrepreneurship and pursue higher education.

Sonnyboi EBC is a 6% New England IPA that features loads of late-addition American Calypso hops for tropical mango, pineapple and citrus aromas and flavors. The beer was named after the anthem of the Rock Autism Music Festival, which Rock Autism founder Max Muscato wrote about his brother Sonny and his struggles with autism.

“Sonnyboi was created through our Innovation 10BBL Series,” Ellicottville Brewing Owner Peter Kreinheder says. “I felt the name suited a golden New England-style cloudy IPA. And with NEIPA’s being as popular in the market, it just made sense.”

Rock Autism Executive Director Alea Conte says that Sonnyboi EBC was born out of a shared vision between the nonprofit and the brewery. Plus, it’s a fun summer beer, so that’s beneficial to pretty much everyone.

“The owner sent beer to our events to help out, introductions were made by one of our board members and after that we ultimately agreed we had the same vision for the Rock Autism cause and wanted it to flourish,” Conte says. “Marc Muscato, father of Max & Sonny and drummer in the band, had the idea. He used to make guitars called SonMax Guitars and wanted to do a beer for years. Together, Max and Marc settled on Sonnyboi, a beer named after Max’s song about his brother. Sonnyboi sounds fun and is the perfect name for a summer festival beer.”

Sonnyboi EBC was brewed to benefit Rock Autism’s major event, [the second annual] Rock Autism Music Festival, which features six bands (The Allman Betts Band, Max Muscato & Outer Harbor – Ft. Sonny Muscato, Handsome Jack, Edalo, J.D Simo, The Space), food (Villaggio, Finnerty’s, Tim & Bonnie’s Pizza and more), drinks and fun activities for the whole family. An estimated two thousand participants are projected for the festival this year with a large portion of autism families in attendance as well. The event will take place in Ellicottville on August 31.

“We select specific worthy causes in cycles. Rock Autism provides opportunity thru music to help autistic kids find purpose and direction,” Kreinheder adds. “Max Muscato and his dad have created a terrific charitable grass roots organization and I wish to support them. The creation of Sonnyboi allowed Buffalo bar and tavern owners to help raise funds for Rock Autism and awareness of its purpose. Thru the Ellicottville Brewing Company Brand we will continue to brew Sonnyboi and financially contribute to the cause.”

Sonnyboi EBC will be on tap at the festival, as well as the brewery, This Little Pig, Frankie Primo’s, Osteria 166, Madigan’s, Finnerty’s (Ellicottville), Villaggio, Allentown Burger Venture, The Eagle House, Creekview, Helium Comedy Club and Town Ballroom, among others. West Shore Brewing Launches New Mug Club, Announces West Fest 2.0

Clarence’s West Shore Brewing have launched a new Mug Club, which includes access to free beer, exclusive parties and even more exclusive beer. The new club features an annual membership fee of $75, and spots are open now. You can join online today (includes VIP tickets to West Fest 2.0) or sign up in the taproom.

West Shore has also announced their second annual West Fest, a celebration of all things West Shore Brewing in honor of their second anniversary, West Fest 2.0: Beach Party, which will take place July 27 (2pm). The party will features a host of special beer releases, food trucks and live music.

As a West Shore Mug Club member, you are entitled to exclusive beers brewed just for you four times a year (four times a year members will vote on a beer style and a pilot batch of that beer will be brewed just for members), $1 off pints every single day, a free beer during the week of your birthday, discounted ticket prices for all brewery events, an exclusive member party once a year, special can/bottle reserves and more, including tasting event opportunities, merchandise deals, and taste tests.

West Shore Owner Josh Dziomba says that launching an official Mug Club is something the brewery has always had planned, it just took some doing to finally roll it out because he couldn’t get out of his own way basically. And, in his opinion, there are a few key reasons that everyone should join.

“This has been in the works for a long time,” Dziomba says of the Mug Club. “However, partially because I over-analyzed it so much, it fell to the wayside. The cool parts are, well besides the $1 off every pint, is that you will be able to reserve set numbers of cans/cases every time we have a can/crowler release. So, if you are out of town or can’t make it in that day you can still get it. The second part is that we will hold a vote of the members four times a year and we will then brew a special pilot batch that will only be available to Mug Club members. There will be four different styles, so we won’t have any repeats. They could be seasonal, funky, experimental or traditional – whatever the members want. It will be focused on tasting and talking about the process and history of each beer at a special release party for each one.”

West Fest 2.0 will feature three bands, Pine Deer Project, Shawn Duescherer and Fools Like Us, food trucks and a number of special beer releases. Plus the VIP tent will have some special variants, and we are also shooting for some guest taps from outside the area.”
